Re: Router And XBox 360/Live
You will need a router where your computer is. And The wireless network adapter for the 360. That is it. Any type of access point will work, but the 360 one is much easier. It plugs into the back of your 360 and is very small. My Fan Page http://theusualgamer.net/MyFanPage_Heelfan71.aspx

The router was just hooked up in the computer room. So I just need the wireless network adapter and change my ISP settings with XBox Live?Originally posted by Heelfan71You will need a router where your computer is. I think the 360 will autodetect if you just set it to "wireless"Originally posted by JayBee74The router was just hooked up in the computer room. So I just need the wireless network adapter and change my ISP settings with XBox Live?#SimnationComment

Re: Router And XBox 360/Live
I'm getting ready to move and my desktop comp is on its last legs. I'm getting ready to get a new computer and am currently deciding on a desktop v. laptop. If I decide on a laptop (gonna be a mac this time I think), can I have the modem connected to a wireless router and that be it? or do i have to have the modem hooked up to my desktop and then run it to the wireless router like I have now?PS4: aBayBates

doesnt your router have to be a wireless to pick up the signal?Originally posted by Heelfan71You will need a router where your computer is. And The wireless network adapter for the 360. That is it. i borrowed a laptop for the summer and it has wireless built in, but I only have a normal router. in your case, the 360s wireless adapter is the same as the laptops wireless system. you still need that wireless router, right?Comment

You can connect your modem to a wireless router. As long as your laptop is wireless, it can connect to the wireless router as well.Originally posted by abates21I'm getting ready to move and my desktop comp is on its last legs. Just make sure you're using the same 802.11a/b/g standard in both devices (laptop/router).Comment

Re: Router And XBox 360/Live
Yep thats exactly right Wally
Something else to consider... The wireless adapter for the Xbox360 is around 90 bucks you could always move the router and modem to the room you are moving to and buy a wireless adapter for PC instead which is around 30- 60 bucks.
Not sure if you could use a non-Microsoft wireless adapter on the 360 because the drivers.Comment

Yep. If the router isn't wireless (ie: an access point) it will do no good.Originally posted by RubenDouglasdoesnt your router have to be a wireless to pick up the signal?

A typical setup is coax cable from the wall goes into the cable modem. CAT 5 cable (aka network cable) from the cable modem into the WAN port on the wireless router. CAT 5 from PC into one of the ports on the router.
Wireless network adapter in the Xbox or 360 setup with the same SSID and encryption scheme (assuming you're using encryption....which I'd recommend).
For additional security I typically use encryption, MAC address filtering for all devices, turn DHCP off on the router and set all the IP's on all my laptops/PC's/360adapter/360 as static IP's. It can be a little confusing doing all of this so if one isn't familiar with it, it's probably not worth it. Depends on how secure you want your network.Comment

Re: Router And XBox 360/Live
You can. I'm using a Linksys bridge. I used it on the original Xbox and the 360. No need for drivers as the 360 doesn't need to know what it is. Just has to relay data to it.Originally posted by BigTigLSUNot sure if you could use a non-Microsoft wireless adapter on the 360 because the drivers.
I went with the Linksys Bridge because it can be used for other things and was $50. I don't think the MS wireless adapter can be used for anything aside from Xbox/360.Comment

Re: Router And XBox 360/Live
I assume the Netgear router is wireless (ie: access point functionality)?
Wireless thing with your desktop is just buying a wireless card for your desktop (you'll have to open your desktop to install the card) and configuring it with the same SSID as is on your wireless Netgear router.
Honestly, I'd just buy a Netgear or Linksys bridge to plug into the 360. $50 and it's a piece of cake. Something like this:

Im going to head to Compusa today ... I have been wanting to move my router for a while now, but couldn't decide on the best way to network it.Comment

Re: Router And XBox 360/Live
That was easy. Even though I moved to a new house using a different computer, all I had to do was snap in the 360 wireless adapter and I was on Xbox Live immediately.Originally posted by GoldenstWarriorI think the 360 will autodetect if you just set it to "wireless"Comment

Re: Router And XBox 360/Live
Makes sense since your router settings didn't change. It's talking to your router to get outside.Originally posted by JayBee74That was easy. Even though I moved to a new house using a different computer, all I had to do was snap in the 360 wireless adapter and I was on Xbox Live immediately.
My guess is your router is broadcasting the ESSID and is why the wireless adapter just connects. Not very safe, but if it works and you're happy with it, that's good.Comment
