My guess is your router is broadcasting the ESSID and is why the wireless adapter just connects. Not very safe, but if it works and you're happy with it, that's good.
    How is it not safe?

I have the lynksys wireless gaming adapter and the wireless G router, but I cannot get it to work with my 360! I used the same setup for my PS2, but the 360 won't detect it. Can anyone help me?

If your ESSID is being broadcast, anyone who boots up a wireless PC/laptop can see what your ESSID is and be given the option to connect to it.

If WEP and/or MAC address authentication are set to off and DHCP is on, they can connect to your home network and any PC that's on your home network.

DHCP is on by default and WEP/MAC authentication is off on almost all wireless routers/access points.

By setting ESSID broadcast off, they'd have to find out your ESSID. That's possible, but an additional step that many wouldn't bother taking unless they really wanted on your network.

Right now I'm on a wireless laptop in my living room connected to my network. I can see 7 other wireless networks on my laptop. 5 are encrypted and 2 aren't. 1 of the 2 is using all the defaults (ESSID: linksys).

Ironically my girlfriend was over with her laptop a few weeks ago. She said she couldn't print to my printer. I took a look and she was connected to one of my neighbor's networks, and using their internet connection to get on the web, because they were broadcasting their ESSID, had DHCP enabled and weren't using any authentication. So it's pretty easy to connect to someone else if there's no encryption and the ESSID is broadcast.
