    Laptops-Suggestions?

I am interested in buying a laptop soon, possibly in the next three weeks but im not too informed on the field. Can anyone here give me some suggestions of what I should buy and information etc... First of all, I don't like macs and wouldnt get one. I would only want a computer with windows, macs are out of the question. Secondly, price is not a concern so whatever it costs isnt really too important, I just want to get the best I can for the money I spend...if two are similar and one is cheaper obviously I would prefer the cheaper one. Things im looking for in this is long battery life, as i need to be able to use it for a pretty good amount of time while not plugged in, and then speed becuase...who doesnt value speed? So basically what I'm asking is for some suggestions on what I should buy and informaiton about them and that. Thanks guys.

Macs can run Windows now...just FYI. So dont let that be the main reason you pass on a Mac.

Don't even think about getting less than a gig of RAM, you'll regret almost instantly. I've had two dell laptops(both 512) and a dell desktop(256) and they all started to run so slowly after a few months no matter how many spy and adware programs I run. Maybe it's just me but all three of those computers just turned to absoloute crap and I had to reformat every 2-3 months the slowdown gets so bad. I'm getting a new laptop soon and I'm leaning towards a mac unless i can find a good deal on anything but a Dell.

Out of curiosity, why do you dislike Macs? Have you used one lately? I can't recommend the MacBook (or MacBook Pro if you need a higher-level computer) enough.

If you must get a Windows laptop, I'd go with a Lenovo ThinkPad.

This is going to happen no matter what PC you use. There are too many people out there who have nothing better to do than make life hell for PC users.

Or, you could get a Mac and not have to worry about spyware, malware, virii, etc...

Exactly, I'm probably getting the new Macbook in the next month or so, I've had enough of PC's. If I'm really intense about it and run scans atleast twice a week I can sort of keep it under control and I can watch movies without much slowdown but only on VLC player which is fairly ridiculous. No matter how many programs I run to get rid of spyware my comp refuses to play videos on windows media player for more than 10 seconds without basically stopping completely.

I have a MacBook Pro, but I played around with some of the MacBooks at the Apple Store. They look pretty nice. I would recommend maxing out the RAM though, since a lot of the programs out there for the Mac still aren't universal apps -- when the Mac switched to Intel chips, the old Power PC programs were forced to run in an emulator, which can tax computers with low RAM. 1 GB should be enough, but I maxed out with 2 gigs, and I don't notice any slowdown.

Yeah, I've read in a few places that if you do anything besides internet or word processing it really slows down if you only have 512. I'd love to get 2 gigs but it's another 500 to get it upgraded if you buy from the applestore but only 100 extra to upgrade to 1 gig, which doesnt make any sense to me and since I'm on a budget I cant afford it. I've heard it's very easy and much cheaper to buy ram and install it yourself but I'm not going to be doing any video editing or running other "high stress" apps so I figure a gig will be fine.

                  Re: Laptops-Suggestions?

The reason for the price disparity is because if you get 1 gig, you get two 512 chips, but if you get 2 gigs, you get two 1 gig chips.

It's not very easy to change the ram in the new laptops, but you can always take it into an Apple store and get them to do it for you. I don't know what you'll be using your computer for, but it does sound like 1 gig is enough for you.

Make sure that you get one 1 gig chip if you are going to get a gig worth of memory, because most computers come with 2 DIMM slots (the slots where shared memory is placed)...Dell is good for that....I just upgraded my shared memory from 256MB to 1GB and when I opened my PC there were 2 128MB chips in there....same when I upgraded the memory on my laptop there were 2 256MB chips instead one 512MB chip...But what you do is just replace one of the existing chips with the upgraded chip and then you will have one of the existing chips plus the upgraded memory.....But if you are gettin the dual core get like 2GB of shared memory b/c the more processing power you have the more memory you can add....Make sure that the processor is at least 2.66GHz b/c if you have alot of memory and not alot of processing power your PC may slow up again.....Its like having one person trying to bake 5,000 pies at one time!!!

Seriously, if you're getting a PC, get a Lenovo ThinkPad (as I mentioned above). Stay far far far away from Dell.

Dell has turned into the new Packard Bell. Among other things, they hardwire their computers with proprietary components, which makes them very hard to upgrade (which is why they're so cheap).

Don't hate me for bringing this thread back from the dead but I too am interested in getting a laptop and don't really know where to start.

Firstly, I'm a student with a fixed budget so I can't be shelling out for fancy pants Notebooks and such. I'm strictly a console gamer so basically all I would need it for is to surf the web, download tunes, and write papers.

What is a good basic laptop? How much would I be looking to spend? And where is a good place to buy? I live in Toronto but if there are better deals online perhaps that is the place to check out? I have the day off tomorrow so I am gonna go around and see what I can find.
