I think it also depends on what you're into. If you're into singing (like I am) then of course you're going to like musicals. If you're not, you might not.

My fiance loves the play and movie, and I've had to sit through them several times... I can't stand Rent at all. I don't like the characters, the songs are boring, the plot is predictable, and when it comes down to it - it's just not very interesting.

I have AIDs! But I'm not going to pay rent! No, we're not going to pay rent! last years rent! Because everything is rent! and because I have AIDs...

Do yourself a favor. If you do want to see it - see the live production instead. The movie is dreadfully dull. The live production was somewhat bearable.

Rent might possibly be the gayest movie ever, even gayer than Brokeback mountain which is pretty much impossible to top in terms of gayness.
