    MacBook Pro?

Fellas, I'm starting to get back into the market for a new laptop, and am considering the new MacBook Pro... It has the dual Intel processor's, and is supposedly extremely quick.

MacBook Pro laptop with M5, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chips. Built for AI and Apple Intelligence. Up to 24 hours of battery life. Liquid Retina XDR display.

Does anyone have one of these, if so, how would you rate their performance? You can dual boot to Windows XP as well as Tiger, so that would be a major plus as well.

Oh yeah, I know there are a lot of Mac diehards out there... what are some of the pro's/con's (in you fellas' opinions) of owning a Mac?

    Re: MacBook Pro?

I have a iBook G4 and it's been great to me. Never had a problem with it and I've had it for about a year now. The number of apps aren't nearly as much as a PC but you'll find that there is a Mac equivilent to all the major windows apps. The new Mac Books look pretty sick, and if I didn't have a laptop already, I would definitely get it.

Got the 15" and apps work very nicely in windows mode as well as mac apps in Mac mode...fast machine!! Though there may be some games that you should look up for to see if they work.MVP worked greta..Madden was too fast and no way to slow it down..Gets a bit warm but so does my Alienware laptop....nice machine though!!

So you have the 15" Macbook Pro Triggerfish? How is the SuperDrive? Pretty reliable? How does the Windows Compatability work? Say I have photoshop for my PC... can I use that same copy on my Mac? Or do I still need the Mac only version, which means another $600?

I do not have photoshop but I will assume it work...check this site..it's a good place to start. You will need to load up a full version of XP service pack 2 though...with a valid serial number.

The Windows compatability works as follows:

You download a Beta program called Boot Camp. When you run Boot Camp, it will partition your system disk into an OSX and a Windows partition. You then install your own copy of Windows on the Windows partition. You then have the option to boot to the Mac OS or the Windows OS. Unfortunately, you have to reboot to switch between the two, but from what I know, Windows programs seem to run perfectly fine. So yes, you can use your PC copy of Photoshop, but you can't use it natively through the Mac OS.

            Hope this makes sense!

Thanks fellas, that helps tremendously. Is it going to be Vista compatible as well? Also, any more opinions on the MacBook Pro? It will be another 1-2 months, but I am really wanting to make the switch... and now that I can have a PC and Mac in one, why not switch, right?

Olec... I don't play games at all on the PC, however I do a lot of music, video and image editing, which is why I was going to go with the pro. It just seems to fit better for what I need it to do, with the graphics card, etc...

Damn you Macbookers! I'm still plugging away on my Jan 2003, 867MHz, USB 1.1, Combo Drive 12in Powerbook. It still a great machine, but I want a new one.

WTF, you're right on in that you are best suited to the pro for what you do.

I was thinking of getting a stacked Macbook Pro(the 15.4 in $2499 version), but I decided it would be better, for just a couple hundred more, to get a 20in iMac($1699) for home, and the entry level Macbook($1049). Especially with the educational customer free iPod + Free Printer deal going on right now, I'm making the difference back, and getting more. A road computer for light tasks like writing papers(that's the only thing I really do on the road besides email and surfing), and a more powerful desktop for any photo, video and audio work I wanna do.

Now I just gotta hold out with this Powerbook for awhile longer and save up those pennies.
I drive a 2005 Toyota Prius Gas/Electric Hybrid. My last tank was 53.6 miles/gallon. Gas prices fear me!

Silverstring, have you heard anything about the Merom processors coming out? And is it worth the wait? I'm anxious as heck to pick one of these babies up and I know that with any purchase I will have buyer's remorse. But I am just about ready to go forth with my purchase.

The only thing I know is that they are supposedly on track to release in September.

If you can wait that long, wait. If you can't buy the machine that does what you need to do now.

I don't get caught up with the whole "should I wait?" thing. Your mind will ALWAYS play that trick on you. Unless you plan to buy every machine you buy the DAY it comes out(and sometimes even then) you will be pissed when something NEW comes out. "Hey! I just bought this computer yesterday/last week/last month/6 weeks ago/3 months ago/last year! Damn! Look at this new thing I should've waited for!" And in technology and computers that next thing is ALWAYS around the corner, so what can you do, wait forever?

Didn't mean to not help you with your question or get up on a soapbox, its just that I've played that game, and now I realize it's not worth it. If the Macbook represents a good model for you today at the price, that wont change based on a future you cant predict. Plus you get to use the thing from now until September or whatever....

I'm not surprised. Are you? Did you think you would warm to Macs as quickly as you have?

To me, this is the central point of the whole Mac/PC debate. I am certainly not interested in rehashing the actual argument, but I do have an observation about it.

The people(well, 99% of them) "against" Macs have never lived with a Mac. What do I mean by "lived"? Sure they may have used it for a few minutes here and there, or in a class, or 10 years ago in school. But they haven't used them extensively, day in and day out, to see what the REAL advantages are. See, that's the difference between Mac and PC/Windows loyalists. Most Mac people have used both, so they can accurately compare and have a more informed opinion, see what they are missing(mostly scanning their PC every day-automatically or not), and what they are gaining. Most PC people have only used one thing their whole lives and bash the Mac based on things they read(like in the past-specs pages) or misinformation passed around, not because they actually have the background to make a fair comparison.

When you have little/restricted access to a Mac, a lot of the time it is going to bug you, and it is almost certainly off-putting. Not through any fault of the Mac, it's just that since(and the numbers prove this) most of us cut our teeth using PCs, so when we come against something that doesn't play into our well-ingrained habits, we feel uncomfortable. Old habits die hard. When people stick with it, though, they end up liking it, often preferring it.

I think the above experience and the experience of the new Mac owners on this site an elsewhere proves this is often true. Everyone else is too hung up on things like building their own and the high price myth to ever consider a Mac. I'm talking about normal users though, not hobbyists and IT guys so married to windows they'd be out of a job if the world switched to OS X.
