Net Neutrality. This is ****ed up

This isn't a new issue, but I haven't seen this topic anywhere here. I don't think this is against the rules. I'm pretty sure it isn't.

So what's everyone's comments on this?

Kind of sad to see that no one has responded to this yet. I guess people dont understand the magnitude of something like this.

I got this from a site with an article on the issue, I'll just paraphrase it:

Comcast and Verizon want Net Neutrality because it will limit people's ability to communicate to others in masses over the internet, meaning its harder to hold big businesses and the people they lobby for accountable.

Nobody has responded because once you get to the core of the issue, the consumer is still going to have to pay for the internet upkeep. This law only decides whether it's to large internet companies or the telecoms. We, the consumers, lose either way.

of course we'll always lose... that's how things work... someone has to lose and someone has to win... in this case the businesses win while we lose...

I'm with you on this one ICT. I have emailed Lugar and Bayh (my Senators) and Hostettler about this. Probably doesn't do anything, but I tried.

The consumers are always getting screwed now-a-days, but it doesn't have to be that way if people were just more informed.

thanks to a ruling handed down Tuesday by the FCC that will allow Internet providers to charge customers based on the amount of bandwidth they use. And some argue that it's the greatest threat to freedom we face today.
If this really happens this is NOT good at all.

              and this sounds scary

Consider the overlap between service providers and content providers. Time Warner owns local channel NY1 in New York City. What's to stop the company from optimizing access to its site -- and charging you more for access to other local news? Sound silly? Don't forget that Comcast has been fighting to buy NBC, at a proposed $13.8 billion.

I am convinced this and the Wikileaks stuff going on right now are the first steps in a radically different internet to come!!! The govt. is looking for ways to reign in the information flow at any cost. But that is another story that would probably get this thread shut down real quick, so that's all i will say about it.

Disappointed to hear about the ruling. In Canada we have caps on our bandwidth. Before 2007-08 we all basically had unlimited bandwidth but now everyone is limited to between 60-75 gigs a month. Luckily there's a small but growing company that allows unlimited bandwidth.

I know that's not exactly the same thing as this net neutrality but it's along the same lines. I'm sure this sort of thing will become widespread in the US soon enough.

When they capped it did prices go down?

Nope, if anything prices went up, at least for my ISP.

Funny how bandwidth and cell phone minutes are criss-crossing each other.

Seems like it would make more sense to limit speed. No one really needs 10 Mbps Internet in their home unless they are running some kind of business. Gaming works fine at 5.

I think this is also included, if they offer you one speed, they have to offer me the same speed.

I don't know that this ruling by the FCC is going to have much of an effect right now. It does open up a lot of potential issues though that the government and politicians want to get their hands on though.

Parts of this are very good as they want to keep the ISP from limiting want sites run slow or fast, but then it has bad parts as there is no incentive for ISPs to invest in hardware, opens up censorship by the government, slows technology advancement, government is slow to do any, and will add taxes and fees.
