It is in fact illegal to use any wireless connection without permission. Most likely nothing will happen, but if someone who knows what they are doing, opens there network just to catch people, you could face some penalties/fine or jail time.

Re: "Stealing" Internet Connection
Some routers/wireless cards give you the option of typing in a word as your WEP and it converts it to hex for you. That is essentially a character based code, although if you don't have the same brand wireless card as the router I'm not sure you can make it work without the actual hex code.Originally posted by joebooTo the best of my knowledge, there isn't a way to change the WEP key to something character based either (as it's stored as hexadecimal 0-9, a-f).Comment

Yeah, what he said. I only entered the 26 digit WEP once, but have it saved on a pen drive.Originally posted by ExtremeGamerMy WEP is 26 digits. I have it on a file on a thumb drive if I ever need it. But you should only need to enter it once into the router and you're done.Comment

Interesting. I've seen the passcode field on my router, but never tried it.Originally posted by CM1847Some routers/wireless cards give you the option of typing in a word as your WEP and it converts it to hex for you.
