    Re: Favorite Sports Books

Any of the Ron Luciano books (Umpire Strikes Back, Fall of the Roman Umpire, etc...). Funny, funny stuff. Hard to find nowadays. Some of the late 70's early 80's stuff might be lost on today's fans.

Jay Johnstone's autobiography "Temporary Insanity" ... I must have read this book 5 times between 8th and 11th grades. Classic stuff in there!

In terms of Fiction, Tim Green's first two books "Ruffians" and "Titans" were really fun reads.

I was gonna mention this one tonight as well. The author is Dave Moraniss. He's most known for being as close to an official autobiographer of Bill Clinton.

Anywho this book was great. I have to admit I had some tears in my eyes at the end.

                Re: Favorite Sports Books

Ok this book is clearly out of print but it was one of the more insightful and funny books i've ever read on the business of football. It's written by the former majority owner of the Chargers and called First Down and a Billion: The funny side of Professional Football

I can't think of any owner in professional sports who would write a book that dealt with the goings on of the sport and poke fun at it at the same time. Then again, Mr. Klein had just sold his team to Spanos when he wrote it. Still, it's a great read and you don't really have to know about the history of the Chargers to enjoy it.

It's worth seeking out at used book stores.

I'm reading America's game by Michael Mccambridge, it's basically the entire history of the NFL. It's a lot more interesting than it may sound. I'm about halfway through and I love it so far. Education of a Coach by Halberstam was also quite good and Next Man Up by John Feinstein was pretty good, Feinstein basically got full access to the Ravens for the '04 season.
Oh yeah Patriot Reign by Michael Holley was also a great read, Holley got full access to the Pats for a season, I think his was more of a general overview of how the organization is run while Next Man Up is more of a week by week thing that details how the ravens dealt with offseason, preseason, game day, practices etc.

As for other sports books, License to Deal by Jerry Cransick, Ball Four by Jim Bouton, Moneyball and pretty much any baseball book by David Halberstam are my favorites.

Ball Four- Little outdated but still the best inside look at what happens inside the clubhouse. Some of the stuff in that book is just flat out hillarious.

For those of you who read moneyball

Have you read any of the Bill James Abstracts?

I recently finished the book and I got pretty interested into sabermetrics and I wanted to know if those Baseball abstracts were any good.
