    Computer Help... Please

Hey guys, I'm working on my nieces laptop, and before I got rid of a lot of virus' and spyware/trojans, the CD Rom was working. Now that I used Avast and Spy Sweeper to get rid of all of this stuff, the CD Rom stopped reading discs... it just says "Please Insert Disc" even if there is one in there. What can I do, how can I fix this?

Reinstall the CDROM? Yeah, I uninstalled it from the Device Manager, and restarted it and let it pick it up...found it... but still no avail. I have manually installed it, once again, no luck. I'm thinking that maybe one of the virus' attached itself to something dealing with the CD, and me being ignorant, after quarantining, I just deleted them all without thinking.

Okay guys... I was looking at my logs... and one of the virus' was found and deleted from the kernel32.dll, and one from wininet.dll, and also a dcomcfg.exe... Do you all think that could be my problem?

Could be but if it reinstalls it may just be a timing thing and went bad.

Yeah, I installed the drivers for it... but it still won't pick up. Is there something in config.sys that tells the CD ROM to operate?

If all else fails, backup any needed files and format the hard drive, then reinstall the operating system.

No need to even format the drive, einstalling the OS should work.

:y4: I'm thinking I'm just going to tell them to buy a DVD drive or a cdrw drive and be done with it... CD drives are becoming obsolete anyway, lol.

If I had a copy of XP Professional I think I could take the files and put them on my flash drive, and copy them over to the laptops hard drive, right? If so, that'd probably work as far as the install. I don't know though. I'm lost at the moment.

To reinstall the OS? Never tried it, but I don't think you can reinstall off a flash drive.

I'm not sure what to tell you. Is it under warranty? If so, Dell will help you run diagnostics on the CD Drive and replace it for free.

I don't see it as the CD-Rom dying though. Could be, but most times I've seen a CD-Rom die, the OS won't even detect it. Have you tried a system restore previous to when you removed everything?

To reinstall the OS, you can try to "share" the drive of another computer and run the disc off of that computer.....or maybe that may not work. Never tried it but I know that somehow you can read discs on other computers through the network. Just brainstorming. By the way, excellent prices on newegg.com for those types of drives. Just got me one.......
