I'll give you Eternal Sunshine, but that's it. Perhaps Man on the Moon, as well, but only as a technicality because he was playing Andy Kaufman. Overall though, while he has toned down his act a bit since his initial run of success -- Dumb & Dumber, Ace Ventura, The Mask -- the majority of his roles are still all cut from the same cloth. Just because the sophomoric overtones are gone, doesn't mean that he has actually added any depth to his roles; they are still all rooted in phsyical comedy and wackiness. The movies you listed do nothing short of supporting this. You would've done much better to have listed stuff like Truman Show and The Majestic. Three movies, however, are hardly enough to break the mold he's already set for himself.

Like I just said with Carrey and three movies which stray from his copy-and-paste style, it takes a lot more than making one "serious" movie to get the general public to view you as something other than one certain type of actor.

I think John Cena is the next great actor. I see him playing a wide variety of roles such as a marine, a soldier, a guy who used to be in the army and possibly an ex-Navy Seal who lost his family to crime but through dispensing of his enemies, meets a beautiful woman, who shows him there's more to life than revenge and killing. Of course, he learns this lessen after he's finished killing and revenging on 30+ bad guys.

So, he's pretty much going to be stealing all The Rock's roles?

I disagree. Jim Carrey has broken the mold of over the top wacky chacters like he played in Dumb & Dumber, Ace Ventura, The Mask, and his work on In Living Colour imo.

When you tell me Owen Wilson has a new movie coming out, I automatically assume he will play a goofball/slacker. When you tell me Jim Carrey has a new movie coming out, I don't assume anything.

Jim Carrey is the most versatile comedic actor out there.

If you watched the preview for The Marine, he already stole the Rocks 'Rock Bottom'! That's inexcusable!

I guess you forgot about Robin Williams who won an oscar for a dramatic role also Jamie Foxx, both are much more versatile than Carrey. Not to mention much funnier. Carrey was at his best in Cable Guy, but other than that he just acts too goofy.

Robins Williams and Jamie Foxx are good examples I missed earlier.

If I wanted to reach a little bit, I would also include Tom Hanks.

One Hour Photo was great, Robin Williams is ultra creepy in that. I think he should take more roles where he plays creepy old guys like that, he did it so well in that movie..

I agree. I think he's incredible with dramatic roles. But I don't consider him funny in the least.
Robin, stick to movies like Dead Poets society and Good Will Hunting and leave movies like R/V in the toilet where you found them.

                      Re: you me and dupree

Well I finally rented You, Me and Dupree and although there wasn't any one moment where I roared with laughter with my side splitting I found myself laughing throughout nearly the entire movie.

I think my favorite part was when Carl asked Dupree "What would you think if Dan (or whatever his wife's Dad's name was) wanted you to have a vasectomy?" and Owen Wilson was freaking out, thinking some guy he barely knows was asking him to have a vasectomy.

I dunno why that was so damned funny to me but I guess it just didn't make a lot of sense why he'd think that so it was pretty absurd. Combine that with his acting skills of freaking out and Carls reaction and it was classic. I actually rewound it and watched that part 3 times.

Overall I'd say this was the funniest movie i've seen this year. Like I said, not any one part that was side splitting but constant laughs throughout the movie. From now on I'm just gonna go to any Owen Wilson movie I think.

Finally got around to seeing YM&D. I thought it was pretty good, especially if watching with the gf/spouse. Liked Wedding Crashers a lot more, but this one had it's funny moments.

Well hard to top Wedding Crashers with all those bare breasts in that one long scene. But I think YM&D is much funnier.
