I agree...maybe not the worst but not good. Morello's "solo" in their new single sounds terribly awful and out of place.Comment

Re: Audioslave - Revelations
Many will disagree with me(including many of my fellow die-hard former RATM fans), but I think Morello has become hamstrung by the "IMGB", or "'Inventive' Morello Guitar Break".
That is, Morello rose to prominence and distinction by being able to coax amazing, odd and inventive sounds out of his guitar. From sounding like a DJ scratch table on "Bulls on Parade" to bagpipes on "Voice of the Voiceless", it was always interesting. WAS.
I heard the seeds planted on "The Battle for Los Angeles", and it has only become more clear with the two Audioslave releases. The man has no other direction to his playing. Seemingly in order to live up to his own rep, recent Audioslave songs have a frequent depressing characteristic: the shoehorned-in IMGB.
Let me be clear, I LOVE inventive guitar playing and guitarists . Frank Zappa, Eddie Van Halen, Jeff Beck, etc. In fact, it's what drew me to Morello in the first place. That said, it sounds like, each song, he's like, "ok, gotta put some weird-sounding part in....." and is running out of ideas. The beauty of the aforementioned players and early Morello is that those guitar songs came within the structure and texture of the song, even during solos. Tom's new stuff feels tacked-on. It just seems that he just can't be versatile, so we just get subjected to IMGBs.I drive a 2005 Toyota Prius Gas/Electric Hybrid. My last tank was 53.6 miles/gallon. Gas prices fear me!
Oversimplification is the escape of men who want to avoid the duty demanded by true understanding.Comment

Re: Audioslave - Revelations
I've heard half the album so far, it's better than Out Of Exile already IMO.
Something about OoE became very stale after a few listens for myself. I wish they would move away from the verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge pattern.
I definitely agree with Silverstring on his analysis of Morello, although I am still pretty entertained with what he does. It seems like he's become somewhat complacent.“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. We’re talking about on the biggest stage, in New York, playing out of position and asked to hit fourth for the New York Yankees. I mean, that’s never been done.” - Sheffield on SheffieldComment

Thrasha, would you be so kind to direct me to where I could listen to this early if possible? Tuesday can't get here fast enough to purchase this.Comment

Re: Audioslave - Revelations
Bump; CD comes out today. I've listened to the leak a couple times and I definitely think its better than "Out of Exile." While I agree whole-heartedly with Silverstring about Tom's complacency which has essentially made him a novelty act, I'm glad the band has tried to fill the void by making the rhythm section more apparent. Not to mention Cornell's vocals are on par with "Euphoria Morning" and are nothing like the tiresome and strained vocals he showcased on Audioslave's debut and to a lesser extent on "Out of Exile."

BUMP: Anyone pick this up yet? It's definitely different than their other stuff. I think my two favorite songs on the album are Revelations and Moth. Nothing Left to Say but Goodbye is really good too. I like the direction they're taking with some of this new stuff.Comment

Re: Audioslave - Revelations
Got it last night. So far I'm really liking it, definitely more than Out of Exile and definitely more than their first CD. They're sounding less like a pop band on this release and more like they're carving out their own sound and own identity. Morello is definitely more restrained than then RATM sound we were all used to, but overall the sound is very thick and edgy. I'm digging it.
Original Fire, the first single, is one of the least impressive cuts on the CD, imo....Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.

Me too, it's very different, but I like it. My top 5 are Moth, Revelations, Nothing Left to Say but Goodbye, Broken City, then either Shape of things to Come or Sound of a Gun. The guitar solo in One and the Same gets me everytime also. There's too much of the "Cornell Scream" in that song though IMO.Last edited by NYG_Meth; 09-07-2006, 11:16 AM.Comment
