Laptop Wireless Network Question

Guys I bought a laptop the other day and plan to go wireless soon, but in the meantime I noticed that I am able to connect to the internet using one of my neighbors(not sure which one) wireless connections. I guess they have an unsecured network. My question is what is the vulnerability to my laptop and data ? Can they access my computer or even see that I'm using their connection ? I do some online banking and shopping can they intercept my data and passwords etc.. You get the idea. I plan on getting my own router in a few weeks. Thanks.

they can see that you are using their connection, they could possibly get the other information, but they have to really good to break the security from a bank website. If they leave open their connection, I doubt they even know how to see that someone else is using their connection.

LOL... I'm not leaching just temporarily borrowing their "wireless connection". I pay for my own high speed internet(Comcast). I have a router hooked up just didn't get a wireless one yet. I wanted to know what my risks were using their connection until i get my wireless router. No biggie I can just use my desktop for banking. As a matter of fact I was going to try and track down the person and let them know their connection is not secure after I'm done using it of course :y4:

You could face jail time if they track you done before that.

Also with a unsecure connection anyone can intercept the information in the neighborhood.

This man speaks the truth.

All anyone who lives in that area has to do to steal your info is connect wirelessly on that same unsecure network and run a sniffer program. They'll be able to see every site that anyone goes to, sniff usernames/passwords, hack into your computer etc....

Ah... sniffer program. Makes sense. Thanks Joeboo.. I Guess a smart crook could set up a wireless network in a neighborhood and just wait for a sucker like me... lol Thanks again for your help.
