Same with mine. I uninstalled it a while back when it didn't seem to help much.


Just as an FYI to all - the more extensions installed into FF, the more bloated the browser becomes. FF has always been fast because it's a "slim browser". With a lot of extensions, it no longer is "slim". Of course, some are just too good to pass up, but I'd recommend only installing one's that are needed.

Also, I'm messing around with Beta 2 right now and at the moment, the memory leak seems to be minimized (59mb right now). I'll check back at the end of the day and see if it climbs to 200mb like it usually does.

You don't use tabs? Just curious: Why? It's SO much easier, especially when you're in big forums like this.

I open OS, visit the forums I like or have seemingly interesting stuff and just open every thread I want to read in a separate tab. Then I just run through the tabs atop my screen, read and/or respond, close the tab when I'm done and move along.

I'm not sure why I don't use them. I used Opera for two years before giving FireFox a try, and I always used tabs on that. I'm just not... I don't know... I just don't like them as much. Granted, separate windows are a hassle, but I just don't use tabs. No reason. I just don't like them as much.

As for the beta, every time I open it up, it automatically downloads an un-runnable program called "index". Is anybody else getting this?

Do you guys have all the updates for Firefox 1.5?

My browser (version 1.5.0.5) has been running since this morning, with all of the extensions loaded that I mentioned in the prior post, and it's using 49 MB of memory. No leaks here.

My browser (version 1.5.0.5) has been running since this morning, with all of the extensions loaded that I mentioned in the prior post, and it's using 49 MB of memory. No leaks here.

Yep, all the updates are installed. It climbs to approximately 200mb from 8am till noon. I then restart the browser because it slows down. I'm at 53mb right now and I closed, re-opened FF 5 minutes ago.

My guess is the problem is a combination of some extension and maybe a setting in FF.

How do you check how much memory it's using?

Right click the taskbar at the bottom of windows, choose task manager, select the processes tab and then find firefox.exe in the list.

At the far right it should have a column display "Mem Usage". Check that.

PS - That Tab Mix Plus extension is excellent. I was using the Tabbrowser Preferences extension, but it had way too much stuff I didn't need (and is a bloated extension that I've heard has caused problems in the past). I just removed it and installed this one and it's perfect. Thanks!

I assume you're using XP:

1. Hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete
2. Click on Task Manager
3. Click the Processes tab
4. Click the Mem Usage header twice to sort it from biggest to smallest. Chances are firefox.exe will be atop the list.

Damn, right now FF is up to 71K. I've sprung a leak, too!

Yep. The memory leak is a known problem with FF (probably an issue with extensions and the browser itself). It's my only complaint with the browser.

The leak only occurs with the browser open for an extended period of time. Leave it open for 4-5 hours and if you surf the web a good bit during that time, you should see FF chew up memory.

For what it's worth, I updated to the Beta 2 version and have had it open the entire afternoon. I'm at 78mb right now. With version 1.5, I'd be over 150mb by now so they might've fixed the issue with the latest version.
