Dumb Question

I had a PC and i recently got a mac. When i try to update my ipod it says that it will restore it to factory settings. Im scared this means i will lose my music so I havent done it. Underneath that it says mac formatted ipods can update wihou losing anything. How do I format my ipod to my mac?

I thought it was plug n play? Normally, from my understanding, you wont need to format your ipod becuase Itunes is compatible with both PCs and MACs. I'm probably wrong though.
