    No hard disk found

For work, a couple months back they wanted us to install Vista Beta 2 for testing purposes. Three months of no problems till today. While doing something the notebook crashed. When I boot it just stays at the boot screen. Takes forever to load and than proceeds to connect to the internet. Skipping that takes me to no hard disk found message and proceeds back to trying to connect to the internet. In the bios as well it reads no hard disk drive.

Called the guy whose bright idea was to use Vista and he knows less than me. Nice.

Anyways, anyone that had a similar scenerio with any OS have any advice? Is the HDD dead?

Running rebooting disks gives me the same message, no hard disk found. I can wait till tomorrow to get it fixed or a new one but I actually needed something off it today so I want to see if there is anything I can do.

What about actually disconnecting the HDD and connecting?

Hmm weird, took out the battery and let it sit for a little bit. Turned it back on and boom, went to start windows normally, networking, safe mode, etc. screen.

Good news is my documents are intact, bad news is nothing really works. Just put everything on my flash drive and luckly it didn't crash.

Bad CMOS battery I think, I read about this just the other day in PC Magazine.

CMOS battery eh? Could be, although the crash was result of Vista. Battery could have played into the aftermath.

Doesn't sound like a CMOS battery to me. An easy way to tell if the CMOS battery is bad is to check the time on your PC. If it's off, it's likely the CMOS battery. If not, it's probably not as the CMOS battery is what keeps track of the time when your PC is shutdown.

Sounds like a dying HD to me. I'd get your important info off of there and replace the HD.

yeah, and while Vista caused the crash, I can't really see how that'd be the cause of your "no hard drive" error...if there's a windows error on bootup it's usually "cannot find somestrangefilename.sys" or something similar. "No Hard Drive" would lead me to check my connections to my HD (on my desktop), and make sure something didn't get loose. Then I'd pull all my data off the HD if I got it up so fast so I didn't lose crap.

It's a beta, I'm not really surprised it crashed.

To be honest, I haven't had too many problems with Vista since I got it. First crash and other than a couple minor bugs here and there can't really complain.

Battery is okay and the HDD is no good. Got that replaced today and they said there was a problem with the memory as well.

                Thanks for the help guys!
