I've been subscribed to all the major magazines at some point in the last few years, and I am not strongly leaning towards any of them..
I've been with Sports Weekly since it was Baseball Weekly, and consider its branching out, first football (good), and now NASCAR (bad) to result in a magazine that has lost its focus at the cost of coverage of the specific sport(s). Sports Illustrated had good articles, but didn't really capture the week to week happenings in a given sport. The Sporting News was a bit skimpy, but did cover the weekly happenings while also having some editorials.. It also seems to be the most fittingly seasonal of the magazines. I found ESPN Magazine to be, like the network, filled with flash, trendyness, and being hip, at the cost of content. I don't think I would subscribe to ESPN Magazine for free at this point, unless they made dramatic changes very recently.
I love football, and lately have not been into baseball as much this season. I am not really into basketball or hockey news, but will read about them on a general level. I like to stay "up" on things, without drowning.
Basically, I enjoy reading about sports each week, but want to limit myself to one magazine subscription. Sports Illustrated is a strong possibility due to the writing and editorial content, but they don't really cover much week to week results. The Sporting News tends to cover all the major sports, but I would argue its editorial pieces are shorter, and also potentially not as fulfilling as an article in SI. Sports Weekly is losing points rapidly, due to them giving football only two articles, despite them claiming that expansion would not result in lesser coverage of a given sport.
Pro Football Weekly seems great for football, but is expensive and only covers one sport, which I'd like to avoid since I am looking to only have one sports subscription.
I'd greatly appreciate feedback, opinions, and/or recommendations regarding a sports periodical to subscribe to. If you could support your suggestion with some comments or reasoning, that would be great, and really help me determine what's best for me. Lastly, if there is a magazine you recommend that isn't mentioned here, please suggest it, as I make no claims at being familiar with every sports periodical in existence.
Thanks!
