    Rating the Canadian Sports Announcers

    LOL at Don Cherry's comments:

"Was there any doubt?" he said yesterday. "That means the good people like me and the bleeding hearts and tree-huggers don't like me. Perfect."

Cherry pointed out a Vancouver paper named him the most-hated person in sports.

"The pinkos strike again," he said with a laugh.

You can tell this a Toronto based poll because Don Taylor didn't show up on the best anchor list.

How in the world did Rod Black finish number 2 as best baseball announcer.

Sometimes I feel like the only person in Canada who does not like Don Cherry at all. He is more of a sideshow than a sports announcer.

How in the world could 3277 people say Jerry Howarth is the best baseball announcer when the man puts me to sleep by the 3rd inning!?

Of course. I watch him because he IS a sideshow. He has little credibility when it comes to actual hockey issues.

I agree, but the alternatives are rather bleak. I wish Dan Shulman would come back.

Rod Black may be an SOB but the fundamentals are there. At least he won't put you to sleep like Howarth.

I too wish Shulman would come back. When the Jays were looking for their new TV PBP guy they approached Shulman but he cited his commitments to ESPN as the reason why he didn't return. I don't blame him as he's basically waiting in the wings to take over the TV broadcast of Sunday Night Baseball.

Here's how I would've answered the survey (based on the choices presented, ie no West Coasters):

Best Baseball Announcer/Analyst: Howarth/Mulliniks (by default; I miss Shulman or Hughson w/ Buck)
              Best Football Announcer/Analyst: Cuthbert/Schultz
Best Hockey Announcer/Analyst: Hughson/Hrudey (& McKenzie for inside info)
Best Other: pass -- anybody but Rauter
              Most Irritating Laugh: Black
              Needs To Shut Up: Kypreos
              Best Radio Host/TV Anchor/TV Host: McCown/Smith/MacLean
              Best Hair: Van Horne
              Annoying Anchor: Toth
Newspaper Guy Who Should Stay Off TV: *stunned upon realizing that Al Strachan isn't in the top 5*
              Duct Tape: Millen

I met Rod Black at the MLB All-Star Gala in '99. He actually tried to make a case for replacing Jim Hughson on Triple Play 2001. I told him, "Uh...yeah. I'll ask around."

                  Oye...and an ego to boot!

Rod Black is ok in small doses. I think TSN tried making him the face of the network a couple years ago as he was doing Jays/CFL/whatever else and it seemed to have backfired on them.

I guess that's why we have credible guys like Cuthbert and Williams on the network now.

Dan Shulman was completely awesome and he has done extremely well for himself south of the border. I wish he would come back too, but imagine what he costs now?

He lost a lot of credibility when he became owner of the Ice Dogs and showed his hockey genious by winning only 16 games total in the first three years. I guess his theories and anti-Europe attitude don't work so well in the real world. That cemented his sideshow status for me and his schtick has just gotten old.
