Installing RAM, and have some Questions..

I am installing a 1GB of DDR PC3200 184pin RAM into my new Desktop, but am wondering what the best order of install would be?? It already has 2 sticks of 256mb that came with the PC installed in the first two slots...

So I am wondering if I should put the 1gb stick in the first slot, and the 2 256mb sticks in the following 2 slots... Will that give me better performance than installing the 2 256mb sticks in the first 2 slots, and the 1gb stick in the following slot?? I have a NFORCE4 motherboard, if that helps...

    Thanks

Actually, it doesn't matter where in the chain you place them, what does matter is the speed of the memory. If they are mismatched you'll have issues.

also depends what youre motherboard reads. mine maxs out at pc2700 (regardless of MB size). I originially didnt know that and went out of my way to get a pc3200 stick on sale.. i sold the other two 512 chips and now im having issues with the bigger stick.. i entered the BIOS screen and it just shows 1024 mb pc2700 grayed out.

also be aware of your motherboards limits. older desktops (3-4 years old) seem to max out around 1gb. newer with about 2-4.

im sure all this somewhat applies to laptops. if for somereason you max out your mb limit of 2gb and think you can go up to pc4000, i'd re check everything

yeah, if you buy a new stick of faster memory usually the motherboard will just downspeed it to match the slower stuff that's all ready there. Sometimes you'll have memory that won't work too, but it's usually worked out for me.

I believe for dual channel mode, you would place the 256mb's in the 1st and 3rd slot or the 2nd and fourth. I am not sure if having a 1gb stick in there would affect it.
