    DLP projection at the movies

So I hadn't been to the movies in a while prior to seeing "Invincible" this weekend. While checking showtimes, I discover that my local theater has apparently installed a digital projector since I was last there. So I immediately jump online and get some tickets to one of the afternoon shows in the DLP theater.

HOLY CRAP. Talk about a pristine image. I'm spoiled by a nice home theater setup at home, complete with HD and all the associated bells and whistles, and this picture was like the difference between watching a standard def image and an HD image at home. No artifacts, no noise in the picture, no grain, just a beautiful, totally awesome image. And this was while watching a movie with a dated feel that was set during the 70s....I can only imagine how it must look for a movie that uses a lot of CGI and digital effects like Episode III, Spider-Man, etc.

For anyone with a DLP projection system at a theater nearby, I encourage you to check it out. I can't go back to celluloid now.

No doubt. A Rave opened in my area right around Superman Returns and has 8 DLP screens. Very nice. Although, this weekend I saw Invincible at the Rave in Pensacola and their DLP projector (they just installed some) are nicer than what we've got in town. They use Christie projectors in Pensacola, I can't remember what they use here.

Yep, we have two Rave's here in Bham as well and they have some of those DLP screens. They are pretty sweet.

Is that Rave next to Patton Creek and the Galleria good? My wife is always shopping in that area and I just kick around that Circuit City and bookstore. They have DLP screens in there?

Yep, Patton Creek is my neck of the woods. Been to many movies there. They have a couple DLP screens.

Cool, I might try that place out next time I'm stuck there.

Those DLP screens are really nice. I'm glad more theaters are getting these things because they are a good incentive to see the movie in theaters rather than waiting for DVD IMO. If you are stuck going to a run down, expensive theater, I totally understand the reasoning behind just waiting 4-6 months to see it at home.

I've been waiting for HD movies in the theatres.

I still enjoy going to theatres because I'll never have that big of a screen at home but I wish the quality of the picture was better.

I now see all the "big movies" in DLP. Here in LA, there aren't too many DLP screens.

I saw Superman Returns, Episode III, and Episode II in DLP, and they were just unbelievable.

Rave Theaters are the sole reason I even go to movies now. It's too bad in my town though that they have to split movies with a far inferior theater down the street (movie production company issue and not wanting any movie to be done in a week in terms of people seeing it). And yes those DLP showings are NICE, we make it a point to see those if they're offering both options on the same movie.
