    up converting dvd player?

Looking for a dvd player to go with my lcd hdtv (new). I've heard 2 stories....one I don't need an up converting dvd player because my tv does it for me while I'm playing dvd's (720p), and the other story is that I DO need one.

    Any advice?

    thanks!

p.s. not impressed with my 360 as a dvd player...it's just average.

Regular, non-up-converting DVD players only play at 480p, so yeah if you got an HDTV you need one. I have the Sony one and it is a clear difference (IMO anyways) than the 360 player.

Trust me, the upconverting DVD player makes a HUGE difference. I had a few try and tell me the difference was none to minimal, but thankfully I bought one anyway. Running my Sony upconvert DVD player in my HDMI connection truly gives me a near HD picture. I can't recommend it enough.

I'm going to be the complete opposite here, avoid up converting DVD players. Wait and buy either a Blu Ray or HD DVD player if you want HD picture. The difference is not that great, most dvd's it's hardly even noticeable. For a good upconvert DVD player you are looking at $150 or so, plus another $50 for a HDMI cable, so that's $200. HD DVD players will be in the $400 range by Xmas. That's just me though, but I've seen upconverting dvd players on many TV's and hasn't blown me away yet. I brought one home to try on my TV, and had my wife come into the room, using both my prog scan and upconvert, didn't tell her which was which and she could tell no difference.

        Just something to think about.

Maybe you're using an excellent high end regular DVD player though and that's not what he has I don't believe. All I know is the upconverting DVD player is worlds better than the 360 DVD player. I think anyone can see that there is a difference there.

Well, the 360 DVD player is an average to below average DVD player, so a 79.99 player from CC would be a better player. If you are comparing it to the 360, then of course the upconvert will be worlds better.

                Dave,

I purchased a RCA(model DRC257N) upconverting player last week and worked great. I hooked it up to my Samsung 23" LCD HDTV trought HDMI(the player includes a hdmi cable to boot). Very simple setup and the picture looks great at 1080i. You'll inmediatly notice the difference between a standard progressive scan dvd player and a upconverting one.

I've tried it with all LOTR movies, the Star Wars trilogy and a sort of other movies and they look great. Don't kid yourself, the difference it's not light and day, but it is noticable. I can only describe it as a more crisp, clean image compared to regular dvds.

                And for $80, it's a great bargain.

This one will hold me over until the HD-DVD vs Blue Ray war is decided. When that happens, dvd players with either technology will have more affortable prices.

I still stand by my statement that an upconvert is the right way. And I think waiting for price drops of a blu ray or an HD-DVD is the absolute wrong way to go. Any investment you make in either format could potentially be worthless. And there is no end to the format war in sight and could potentially drag on for a few years. Until a winner is decided, go with the upconvert dvd player. And by the time the winner is decided in the future, you would have easily got your moneys worth and all the cables in the place for the high def player.

Anyone have any suggestions for a mid-high end DVD player? I have an HDMI cable already.

We'll if your running your 360 via VGA Cables your DVD's will upconvert to 720p. This has been confirmed ever since the Spring Dashboard Update.

I will personally will be waiting for the 360 HD-DVD add-on this holiday season.

As for stand alone Up-Converting DVD Players, I would try to match the Player with the maker of your TV set.

The Oppo DV-979HD...highest rated upconverting DVD player. I'm looking at either this or the HD-A1 to pair with my new home theater system. It's a good thing my wife and I might relocate soon so I have more time to decide

Based in the heart of Silicon Valley, OPPO Digital designs and markets high quality digital electronics that deliver style, performance, innovation, and value to A/V enthusiasts and savvy consumers alike. The company's attention to core product performance and strong customer focus distinguishes it from traditional consumer-electronics brands.

As for my two cents on the whole upconverting issue, I can definately tell a difference on the Sony Dream System I have, which upconverts DVD over HDMI. On good quality transfers like the 'Lord of the Rings: Extended Editions' and others, the picture is noticeably cleaner and sharper. On old movies however, or on crappy DVD's the difference isn't noticeable (and the upconversion might make it worse).

I'm definately happy though with upconversion and recommend it if you are in the market for a DVD player.
