Apparently they're rarely fatal.

Much depends on where they hit. Afterall, this is the stingray's defense mechanism against other animals. They've killed dolphins, turtles and other fish with their barbs.

Damn R.I.P. Steve.

I always like the guy and his show...he was always trying to do the right thing for wildlife and protect endangered species and animals in general. I think he took a lot of unjustified crticism from the media but even with that he leaves behind a great legacy. Just a sad, sad story.

the report i read said he was swimming above the ray and it got startled somehow and when that happens they "stiffen" their tail/spine as a defense mechanism. the spine hit him under his ribcage going upward and hit his heart. my uncle got stung by one once on a sandbar and it hit him in the calf. other than feeling like a jellyfish sting for a bit, he said it was on par with what it would feel like to be stabbed with a knife in the calf. either way, sad story, however i for one believe you can't outrun fate and this was his passion and i liken it to a nascar driver such as dale e-hardt dying in a race. your chances are increased by simply taking part in such activities but if you are doing what you love to do your life, even if cut short, was exactly what you wanted it to be. R.I.P.

I met Steve briefly at Discovery's 20th anniversary gala last year. He seemed like a great guy. RIP.

This dude was a nut, but I loved his enthusiasm. The channels are talking about why people do things like this, gesh, let the man die in peace. They are saying it is something in the brain that makes them risk takers!
