        CBS gives 'Smith' the boot

NEW YORK (AP) -- Here's something Ray Liotta and Virginia Madsen won't be putting on their resumes: stars of the first new TV show to bite the dust this fall.

"Smith," the Tuesday night CBS drama with Liotta leading a band of high-stakes thieves, is off the schedule, the network said Friday. It will be replaced temporarily by reruns of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" and "Criminal Minds."

Networks don't like to use the word "cancel" -- it sounds so messy -- but the show's producers have been given no promise that it will return.

Its last episode had only 8.4 million viewers on Tuesday, according to Nielsen Media Research. It faced tough competition in the time slot from NBC's "Law & Order: SVU" and ABC's "Boston Legal."

Meanwhile, NBC announced the sort-of cancellation of its Wednesday night serial comedy "Kidnapped," which stars Jeremy Sisto. NBC gambled by putting the show in the time slot held for a long time by "Law & Order," and it failed miserably.

"Kidnapped" will be moved to the television purgatory of Saturday nights, starting October 21. Its producers have been told to wrap up the serialized drama's story lines by the end of the show's 13-episode order, NBC said.

Networks have been wrestling with how to satisfy fans who've gotten involved in serialized dramas when the ratings are poor enough for the show to be canceled.

Fox has put its new comedy "Happy Hour" on hiatus, but insists it will return.

I found this site the other day... pretty cool, it's called Brilliant but cancelled...

Has every new show of the year and the odds of them being cancelled... apparently Smith is the 3rd to go so far this year....

It was most likely the $10M per episode budget...

see, tis is the problem i have with most companies today. where the hell did planning go? i mea crap, did they not know the budget going in? where was the marketing campaign? i mean if they are rolling up 10M per episode, you would think that SMITH would be on every bus in the city, a sign on every cornr with ads running all day every day, yet i didnt even kow this show existed. im not on TV that much so its not a big thing that I didnt know of it but come on. then they cancell it after 3 episodes?

now if they did plan everything out, why didnt they stick to it? i mean what plan calls for the show to be pulled after 3 weeks?

im just so sick of the next *****cat doll, american idol, these gay teenie bopper shows on WB. I finally get a few shows on here that I as an adult can enjoy everyweek, the black donnelys, smith, etc and they get pulled.

you would think that 10M per episode would get them at a better time slot than 10PM on tuesday but whatever its pointless. with the trend we are going at what actor, director, or producer is going to wantt o get involved in a TV show? i mean anything new is canned within weeks, seems like noone is going to be interested anymore and we are left with 6,000 reality shows which although some are inovative and interesteing, most are redundant and its getting old.

sorry for the rant, it just bother me that everything is like cancell this, exclusicve license there, fire this guy, can this product, etc.
