Why should I feel obligated to pay extra because I got good service, I should be able to assume that will be the norm going in. We should have a society closer to England, where tips are derrogatory.
Look at it this way, if restaurants do away with tips and just pay their employees say a $12-15 an hour type payment, then they get paid regardless of how bad or good their service is, thus as has been said, meaning service overall would go down, probably by quite a bit. Think about it, when you go to McDonalds or Burger King why do you think the people working there don't give a rats @ss for the most part about the customer? Because they get paid one way or another regardless of how happy you are. Doing away with tips is a horrible idea.

They'd get more like $8-10 an hour at most. As it is I very seldom get a waiter or waitress who I feel is deserving of a decent tip. Maybe it is because of the area I live in. So to me, I don't think there'd be a noticeable difference in overall quality of service.

I would highly recommend if you (collective you of OS) to go to a Sandals resort sometime. You will see what good service should look like, and then you will see why so few waitstaff employees in America are even deserving of a tip, muchless one that is 15-20% of the meal cost.

well, my philosphy, if you get good service and don't tip, stay home and eat.

Come on. You tip for the service. Waiters get a bad rap. Some work hard and some don't, but still waiting is not easy, because they have to deal with Jerks, that like to boss someone else around, because they get bossed around at work. I give them a lot of credit, becasue I couldn't do it.

if restaurants had to pay their employess a competitive wage then the price of the food at the restaurant would sky-rocket.

I've never been to fond of applebee's maybe because I don't think their food is that great. However, they do have low prices on drinks lol.

Some of you people are pretty pathetic. My waiter would have to punch me in the face most likely for me not to leave a tip. I've never not left one.

If you don't leave a tip because of poor service you are most likely embarrassing yourself. Seriously hope you don't do that in front of your family or girlfriend/wife.

And the servers know what they are getting into before they get the job. There are going to be some nights where you get good tips and other nights when you don't. If you have a problem with that then you should find a new job. Yeah it sucks if someone gives a bad tip but oh well, you knew that that would have to happen sometimes.

Wasn't there a thread exactly like this a year ago?

Why would it be embarrasing to not leave a tip for bad service? Your girlfriend must be terrible cause if me and my girlfriend got bad service she wouldn't care if I didn't leave a tip.

I hear what you are saying, but the truth is sometimes that is the only job out there. Unless you have training in some trade or a college education it is not easy getting good paying jobs. And sometimes even if you have all that it is still hard to find good paying jobs.

Yeah I know it is a last resort sometimes but people have to know that they aren't promised a tip, it's the nature of the business.

Yeah it still boggles my mind how some people can be so cheap and inconsiderate but for the most part my customers tip me well. I work at california pizza kitchen. Just a college job no way could I do this for a career atleast for very long. I've been serving for about 3 months now.

As for me I alwasy leave 15% almost always no matter what even before I became a waiter. Theres been a few occasions when I left less FEW. For the most part I tip over 20% if its great service no doubt.
