And I know what effect that has on sales for Applebees because I stare at the numbers everyday at work. Many of my company's restaurants struggle because good help is hard to find. Unfortunately many of the employees at those locations don't have the attitude that you guys do. Bad service causes a bad rep and the way the casual dining industry is right now, every restaurant needs to cater to the customer as much as possible.

Re: Waiting Tables
100% Agreed. The waiter would have no reason to go out there and try their best to give quality service. Why would they even try? They could just be lazy about it and know there getting tips.Comment

Re: Waiting Tables
Sure some might do that. But then you tell the Manager. So I think many would be scare of that talk with the manager, so I can see them not doing that. Think about your job. I am sure you don't want your boss coming to talk to you about about your work. lolComment

Re: Waiting Tables
was talking about this with the bartenders at a bar friday night (my friend and I only get a chance to hang out once a month-ish, he's busy as hell, but we go to the same place so got to know the bartenders). We all agreed that people with some experience/knowing someone in the serving industry tip well, unless it's horrible, horrible service (and I can tell the difference between the place being busy/hectic and the server just not caring).
My grandpa is a bad tipper, drives me nuts and I usually leave extra cash behind as I leave, but so he doesn't see....Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: Waiting Tables
I hate when i give people amazing service and they don't tip, it's brutal. If you don't want to tip, stay home, make your own meal, get your own drinks, and find someone else to wait on you hand and foot.
I'm not surprised when old people don't tip...i really don't care because there old, im not even mad about it.
Oh yeah and i work at Boston Pizza.....i don't know if its only in Canada or what...someone in the States can answer this for me!Last edited by jerk; 09-24-2006, 11:20 PM.Comment

Re: Waiting Tables
Although I use to work in the restaurant industry, I'm not a big fan of tipping (although I always tip).
The income for servers/bartenders should be agreed upon by the employee and employer. There are countries around the world where tipping at restaurant's isn't standard and the service is still great.
I'm totally against mandatory tipping (usally %15). I wish restaurants would post a sign that customers can clearly see when they walk in. I went to a restaurant in Toronto and didn't know a %15 tip was mandatory until I recieved my bill.
Some places will even cross the line when it comes to tipping. We went to a Korean BBQ restaurant (service was decent) and paid for the bill and left a tip. As we were about to approach the door, our server came up to us and said our tip wasn't big enough. We were like WTF? We weren't told there was a mandatory tipping amount but just told we didn't tip enough. We ended up giving a couple more dollars. I'm never going back to that restaurant. If I wanted to cause a scene I could have asked to speak to the manager but decided not to.Comment

Re: Waiting Tables
We have a mandatory 15% gratuity on parties larger than 10. Too many times we would have a big party and they wouldn't even tip....it blows especially if you spent the whole night waiting on them and u get jack. Also at our work servers have to pay 4% tip pool which really sucks...i've barely been able to make 10% in tips the last couple days at work.Comment

Re: Waiting Tables
They'd get more like $8-10 an hour at most. As it is I very seldom get a waiter or waitress who I feel is deserving of a decent tip. Maybe it is because of the area I live in. So to me, I don't think there'd be a noticeable difference in overall quality of service.
I would highly recommend if you (collective you of OS) to go to a Sandals resort sometime. You will see what good service should look like, and then you will see why so few waitstaff employees in America are even deserving of a tip, muchless one that is 15-20% of the meal cost.Comment

Re: Waiting Tables
Tipping in itself is ridiculous, customers already buy food we shouldn't be paying the staff as well.
And at that a 15% automatic gratuity is the worst idea I have ever seen. In this country our waiters are horrible for the most part as it is, no way they should be compensated on a 15% rate of the food purchased.
If you don't want to pay the staff, then why not make sure your own drink is filled, you bring your own food to the table, and you clean up after yourself. Since you're only buying the food, why should you expect anything more?Comment

Re: Waiting Tables
Maybe it's your attitude. I know many fine waiters and waitress in this country. I'm a big tipper (at least 25%), and I rarely ever get bad service.

Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment
