Need help installing a new graphics card and power supply on my PC...
Hey yall. I just bought my new PC about a month ago. It's an HP Pavilion m7580n media center desktop. I'm trying to make it's gaming capabilities a little stronger. The processor and ram are fine(2.4 Ghz Duel Core and 2 Gigs Memory), but the graphics card is lame(nvidia Geforce 7300 LE). Another problem is the power supply is too small(300 watts) so it won't take a high end graphics card. So I bought a 600 watt PSU and a nvidia GeForce 7900 GS video card for a real sweet price from tigerdirect. The instructions look pretty simple and straight forward but I was just wondering if there's anything else I need to know before starting this procedure. Obviously I know I'm probably voiding my Best Buy warranty by doing this, but oh well. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. How I wish, how I wish you were here. Just google "How to install a graphics card/psu"
It will probably give you step by step instructions. Its really not that hard, just inserting, and installing basically. -

I don't know why you need a 600w PSU. If it was running on 300 and you only added one thing, you only needed to add probably 100w. That thing is gonna be a power-hog now.Comment

Well, the recommended minimum PSU for the 7900 GS was about 500 watts. High end graphics cards bulid up a lot of heat and need a lot of juice. How I wish, how I wish you were here. To answer your question though. You shouldn't really need any help. It really is plug and play for the most part.Comment

Touch something metal inside the computer after you open the case, then proceed. Static electricity can kill...(computer parts that is, not you)
Don't force connections, most connectors only fit one way.
Watch out for your hands, there are quite a few sharp edges in a computer.
Don't touch the contacts on the video card.
Try to handle the video card on the edges as much as possible.Last edited by mudtiger; 10-03-2006, 10:27 PM.Comment
