I saw them perform on Regis this morning while I was waiting for my car to be serviced. Anyway, I'm thinking about picking up their new CD tomorrow and was curious if anybody on here was a fan?

Great band. Great album.
Randolph is truly a talented musician.
Clapton is a guest on "Jesus Is Just Alright" and has trouble keeping up, if that means anything to you...
I definitely recommend it.
p.s. No Mayer
Guests are Clapton, the boys from DMB (Dave, LeRoi and Rashawn Ross) and a gospel singer named Leela James who is fantastic.Comment

Haven't heard the new CD, but I have all his other stuff. RR makes good, down home, foot stompin' music. Lots of gospel/soul influence, but with funk/blues riffs and wrapped up with some jam band grooves. And oh, he's also a great steel guitar player.
He also put together a cool project called "The Word," playing gospel covers with John Medeski and the Mississippi All Stars. That CD, as well as the other projects by those artists, are all definitely worth checking out.Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.

Thanks for the impressions guys. I've heard great things about his concerts and I hope to catch him next time he comes close.
The Clapton thing doesn't bother me. Apparently Derek Trucks has been showing him up on Clapton's tour. Plus, I'm not getting it for Clapton.
I see RR is up on Archive.org. Anybody recommend any shows?

"Unclassified" is an awesome album, I definitely recommend picking it up if you haven't already. And you have to see Robert Randolph and the Family Band live at some point. I've seen them twice, once at Bonnaroo and once at a bar in college, and they are simply amazing live.
edit: Tendrils, as far as live shows, I'm sure they're all good, but I was at "Live at Which Stage, Bonnaroo on 2003-6-14", and it rocked.Last edited by sportsdude; 10-10-2006, 11:56 PM.Lux y VeritasComment

Re: Robert Randolph & the Family Band
sadly, yes. It's costly for a broke college student to go, which I was at the time. I could've gone in '04, but I was doing an internship, so I would've only been there for half the time, making it not worth it. And now I work all the time, so it's kinda out of the question.
Glad I went in '03 though, what a year. Neil Young, The Roots, North Mississippi All Stars, RJD2, Z-Trip, Widespread Panic, The Dead, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Galactic, James Brown...so many more I'm forgetting, but those are the shows I remember...Lux y VeritasComment

Almost done with the first listen of "Colorblind." Amazing album. Easily one of the best albums of the year.

Tendrils:
Glad you dig "Colorblind." It's superb.
You should hear some of their Randolph and the Family Band's live sets on the Net. F*cking blistering. Besides his original tunes, Randolph does some of the most ferocious covers you've ever heard of tunes like "Billie Jean," "Purple Haze," "Can't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "People Get Ready" and more.
Randolph and the Family is a tape-friendly band, so no worries about piracy if you have any. I know where there are some sets of pretty damn good audio quality. PM me, and I'll steer you there.
Take care,

the second time I saw RR and the Fam live, they played Billie Jean and Purple Haze. As you can imagine, RR wailed during Purple Haze. was standing and dancing around while at same time wailing away on a sitar (sic?), awesome.Tendrils:

I'd just like to thank PK for those live show suggestions. "Purple Haze" is just full of fire and the Michael Jackson covers are terrific.
