Re: All Time Most Scary Movie
Weird... I know a lot of people mention the Ring, but that movie wasn't scary at all to me. I was laughing at the scene where she comes out of the TV and that seems to be everyone's scariest moment of the movie.
I dunno... the premise just wasn't one that struck as being scary. A video that makes you die if you watch it? Did nothing for me...
But I'll gladly spend 90 minutes looking at Naomi Watts.NCAA: Michigan Wolverines

Re: All Time Most Scary Movie
Without a doubt my favorite scary movie is Jaws. But I have seen it so many times, it is no longer scary for me. But I do think out of all of the scary flicks, it is by far the best movie.
The Exorcist works for me and I am not religious. Also, when I was a kid and could ignore the cheesy effects, the original Evil Dead scared the crap out of me.
The most recent scary flick I enjoyed was The Descent. Can't wait til that comes out on DVD. I also enjoyed Wolf Creek, which starts slow but is pretty damned intense once it gets rolling.
The new wave Japanese horror flicks (and the American remakes) are not what i would call scary for me. To me, they are all about setting the mood. I find them much more eerie than I do scary.
My wife LOVES horror movies, even the slasher pics, so I get dragged to all sorts of horror flicks. 95% of them, IMO, stink.Last edited by Quint75; 10-18-2006, 11:08 AM.NCAA: Michigan Wolverines

Re: All Time Most Scary Movie
The Ring = not scary, Ringu on the other hand = creepy as hell.
The same could be said for The Grudge & Ju-On.
American remakes of Japanese horror films sucks, the originals are sooooo much better and a lot more scary. Dark Water is another prime example.Patrick Mahomes > GodComment

Thank you! The Ring, it was a good movie, very good movie. But Ringu... AWESOME. The Grudge was an ok movie (got points from me for having Buffy), but Ju-On was incredible.Comment

Re: All Time Most Scary Movie
The Descent was great, but Wolf Creek?! I'm sorry, but that was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I'll use my quote when I reviewed the movie, It took so long that I wanted to fly to Australia and kill them myself. Best part of the entire movie was the head on a stick line, and then the knifing that followed. Other than that, I was counting ceiling tiles.
1. How the killer magically appeared in the back of the car the one girl was hiding in
2.The standard plot point where the killer is thought to be dead, so they leave him alone, along with his high-powered rifle. The gal tried to shoot him with it but couldn't figure it out, so she just leaves. I would have dropped a safe on his head or something, anything to assure he wasn't going to be getting back up. Standard horror flick stuff there.NCAA: Michigan Wolverines

Re: All Time Most Scary Movie
It certainly took a while to get going, but I think that really helped you identify with the characters; they seemed so much more real than the cardboard cut-outs in most horror flicks. Difference of opinion, I guess, but it really worked for me. My big problems with the movie were:
1. How the killer magically appeared in the back of the car the one girl was hiding in
2.The standard plot point where the killer is thought to be dead, so they leave him alone, along with his high-powered rifle. Haute Tension was an awesome flick.
The twist in the story is well done IMO and I loved the brutality of it all, it didn't pull any punches...the kills were GREAT.Patrick Mahomes > GodComment

Don't mind subtitles at all; I'd say 25% of my DVD collection is foreign films. I have heard High Tension is good, but I also know how it ends. Someone spoiled it for me.
Since you like Japanese horror films, have you seen Audition? Another one that takes forever to get going, but the last half hour or so is unreal.NCAA: Michigan Wolverines

Re: All Time Most Scary Movie
Audition is nuts, one of my fav. movies. It is brilliantly done IMO. Everything builds to the finale and the tension is crazy...it all pays off in the end too. There's some of it that is friggin' disturbing and hard to watch but it's worth it.
On top of Audition some other great Japanese flicks are Battle Royale, Uzumaki, Oldboy, Ichi The Killer, etc. They're all terrific.Patrick Mahomes > GodComment

Not to go too far off topic, but I am a huge Kurosawa and Ozu fan. Have almost all of their stuff on DVD. Just picked up the new Seven Samurai from Criterion, and it's brilliant; they did a heckuva job remastering. It's much better than the older edition.NCAA: Michigan Wolverines
