Not to go too far off topic, but I am a huge Kurosawa and Ozu fan. Have almost all of their stuff on DVD. Just picked up the new Seven Samurai from Criterion, and it's brilliant; they did a heckuva job remastering. It's much better than the older edition.
This is a bootleg, but it's region 1 and the only way you'll see it here on a US player.

Ummm I'm not for sure, there was a Special Edition DVD that was released to certain parts of Canada & the U.S. a while back...I know you can rent it on Netflix and the such as well.

When in doubt, go with the bootlegged copy lol.

The Thing, one of scariest movies. Exorcist though takes the cake, no questions, with poltergeist coming in close second. What make a great scary movie is the hint of it being real, and could happen to you. We all know freddy cant come into our dreams and kill us, so that idea is always in the back of our head, thus eliminating fear. But with the exorcist or poltergeost, we have this idea that it could be possible, and that frightens the sh*t out of us.

The chair scene in Poltergeist (I mentioned it in my original post) freaked me out lol.

It was soooo subtle and probably not even picked up by a lot of viewers the first time around but it's stuff like that which makes ghost moves creepy as hell.

No idea..LOL But it's not an original print. The quality isn't horrible, but it's not reference quality. It's the best you're gonna get unfortunately. I doubt we'll ever see that movie distributed in region 1.

It's supposedly getting a remake, I'll be surprised if it ever comes off though.

The plot seems like something that would be too controversial over here and would get hammered by the media, politicians, etc.

No chance of a US remake for Battle Royale. No chance. It would be destroyed in the media.

American remakes of Japanese horror films sucks, the originals are sooooo much better and a lot more scary. Dark Water is another prime example.
I liked "The Ring" (US Version), but agree with you on "Ju-on" vs. "The Grudge." "Battle Royale" is not scary, but is one crazy *ss movie.

Other great Asian Horror flicks are "Tale of Two Sisters" (Korea), "The Eye" (HK), and "Shutter" (Thailand). Speaking of which, I read that Jessica Alba is going to star in the US remake of "The Eye."

The Pang Brothers, who directed "The Eye" are doing their first US movie "The Messengers" that is supposed to be released in Feb '07.

                      You're right, a terrific movie.

My vote would go to: The Excorcist

It does'nt freak me out now because I've seen it about 5 times now but I it did scare the hell out of me when I first watched it. What would be your pick.
This movie still scares this s*** out of me.

And Halloween is pretty creepy too.

I've seen that movie, it's highly rated on Blockbuster and was listed on the top ten scary movies of alltime. I thought it was pretty good and def. scary but i wouldn't personally put it in the top 10 of all time scary movies..
