I've seen so many people everywhere using mp3 players, but they almost always seem to be Ipods!

So without creating any heated debates, I just want open answers to why Ipod is usually the choice for people choosing mp3 players?

was the first. click wheel idea was popular. it was the "cool" thing to have. otherwise, it's really just another mp3 player. it's best to try several out in the store... get an idea of what functions/space/look you want, and choose based on that. now a days, most mp3 players are very similar in price for storage space, so it's really about form and function, not about space and price anymore.

They are trendy and by far the most popular of the MP3 players. They are also probably the best in terms of size and quality, the biggest reason to look elsewhere would be price.

The price actually isn't bad anymore with the 30gb version being $250 and the 80gb being $350.

I'd say a big factor in buying the iPod is the fact that there are so many accessories that are made for it. No other MP3 player is even close when it comes to extras.

Yeah, plus the new $80 1 gig player. When I bought my player I spent $250 on a 40 GB when the 20 GB iPod was $300, and that was before it even had video capabilities. They really have closed the gap though in that respect.

I was arguably the most relentless critic of iPods both here and at Digital Sportspage for the last few years. I've owned Archos and Creative MP3 players and loved them.

But my 40 GB Creative Zen is almost full, and my next MP3 player will be an 80 GB iPod Video, no question.

Why? Because the iPod has gone from arguably being the biggest ripoff in the MP3 industry to the best value.

When I bought my 20 GB Archos player for $250 in 2002, a comparable-sized iPod cost $400. When I bought my 40 GB Creative player for $225 in 2004, a comparable-sized iPod cost $350. And both had slightly better sound quality than the iPod.

But the release of the 80 GB iPod Video earlier this year changed everything. Eighty gigabytes, plus video playback capability, for $349 is a SICK deal. It's the ultimate value in the MP3 player market, especially when you factor in the always-great Apple ergonomics, elegant design, iTunes interface and huge cottage industry of iPod accessories.

When Apple has lured even a massive skeptic like me, you know it's doing something right.

Not true.

Eiger Labs and Rio each had an MP3 player on the market in the U.S. before Apple released the iPod. I'm almost certain Creative had the Nomad -- which looked just like a portable CD player -- on the market before the iPod, too.

Jeez pk I agree with you on just about everything. I also got a Creative Zen 40 gig two years ago for Christmas...its full. The 80 gig is looking to be my next purchase for me because of the price, video, and accessories. iPods have alot of options for car integration, so that is another advantage.

And look for that price to potentially come down sometime soon. Many still believe Apple has a true video iPod that they haven't released yet, so if thats true, I'd say the 80gb one will certainly come down some.

so does anyone have comparable evidence as to the ipod sounding better than the other mp3 players?

I am possibly going to buy a ~2gb mp3 player and the Nano is in my range, but Sandisk has one that has better features, I just want one that's reliable and sounds great, and will possibly work in my car.

PK, I have owned the same MP3 players you have, based largely on your recommendations. Just recently I bought the 80 GB Video Ipod. Best 350 bucks I have spent in some time.

Super easy to rip DVD's too, Itunes is fantastic imo. I've been really, really happy with this device.

I probably will fill my Creative just before Christmas, and I hope to get my 80 GB iPod before New Year's, just in time to "obtain" anything from the year-end best lists by the critics that I might have missed.

I'll need to sell my Creative and sell some more stuff to raise the funds, as you know I buy nothing with my money. It's always someone else's cash raised through auction sales. But there's a lot of will on my end, so I'll find a way!

I'm going to lean on you and all of the other iPod cats heavily in here for tips on freeware that will help me get the most out of my new toy in the New Year.
