    Laptop Ethernet Problem

I thought I would post my problem here since you guys have done a good job before. I purchased this laptop like two weeks ago and did a system recovery just so it was brand new. i've dialed up before but now have faster internet. Here's the problem:

I plug the ethernet cable in the laptop but it says 'limited or no connectivity'. basically it's not connecting. the light is green which means it recognizes the cable, but it don't work.

Here's the setup. We have a wired ethernet network and the other 2 computers work. I would just move the ethernet cable to the laptop from the cpu that was working and it don't work

This is the first laptop i've ever purchased so I don't know what the problem is. Is there something in the network connections that you change? any help would be appreciated.

    Re: Laptop Ethernet Problem

Hmmm.... if its a valid connection, it should be just plug n play.

Does you internet connection require you to log in before you access the internet? Or is it always on, ie.. a cable connection?

Plug the cable back in to your laptop.. Goto START, RUN, then type in CMD.

It should open up an msdos window.. From there, type in ipconfig..

    Post what it shows...

Also try typing in ipconfig /release then (after it releases your ip address) type in ipconfig /renew.

It should give you a valid ip address. after that.. try ping www.google.com

see if it comes back with any results.

      Ehternet adapter local area connection:

      Connection-specific dns suffix: nothing
      Autoconfiguration IP Address: 169.yada yda
      Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
      Default Gateway: nothing

      Ethernet adapter wireless network connection2

      Media state….media disconnected

then i did the ipconfig /release and it said 0.0.0.0 on autoconfig ip address and subnet mask

        Make sure you do

        type in ipconfig /renew
after you do an ipconfig /release

Is this dsl or cable? Do you have a router or just a modem and hub?

Your ip address of 169 means you are not pulling in an ip address from your router or modem. You need an ip address to get on the net. The 169 is an auto address that windows assigns when it can't get a real one.

An easy step to try is to turn off the pc, unplug the router and/or modem for 30 seconds or so, then connect the modem, let it go thru it's boot up, then connect the router and turn on the computer. Sometimes simple reboots cure these things.

If you are still getting a 169 address, something might be going funky with the router/modem or you are not set to get an ip automatically thru DHCP. I'm assuming you didn't have to go thru a manual setup and type in an IP address from your internet service provider, is that correct?

If you right click on my network places and select properties, is your local area connection enabled? Right click and select enable if not.

Right click on local area connection and select properties. Make sure TCP/IP is listed, click on it and select properties, make sure obtain ip and optain dns automatically is selected.

Do you know if the desktop pc's have a static ip address or are they atuo assigned by DHCP? You can right click on my network places on one of the desktops, select properties, then right click on local area connection, then status, then the support tab. Does it say assigned by DHCP at the top for address type?

EDIT: whoops, re-read original post and saw you mentioned this is work pc/laptop. Edited my questions
