    Re: John Mellencamp

While most of you are dogging on him, thats fine, but I can almost guarantee you know all the lyrics to almost all of his songs. The dude writes some bad *** songs, and for awhile he kind of went away, and now he has a hit song. Would you be any different if the star bug hit you again? Its not his fault Chevy plasters the song all over the place, and whores it out every 5 minutes while we watch the NFL. I know im biased becuase he is from my hometown and lives like 10 minutes from me, but theres no doubting his songs are some of the most memorous in american rock and roll history. Now, his political views i cant stand, but thats another story.

No one questions that Mellencamp has made a very nice career out of being a poor man's Springsteen and that he has written some excellent songs and records.

But this "hit" reeks of both commercialism and faux-patriotism. And it's only a hit because of Chevy, not because of radio airplay.

I'm sure Q95 in Indy and some Bloomie stations are playing the hell out of it, but Mellencamp gets airplay on those stations 365 days per year. He's the rock music patron saint of all Hoosiers; I think only Jim Nabors is held in higher regard as a musician in Indiana for his annual rendition of "Back Home Again in Indiana" at the 500.

But I haven't heard "Our Country" on a single rock station here in upstate N.Y., so if it's truly a hit, it's only because of saturation by Chevy.

I like Mellencamp. I have a chunk of his tunes on my MP3 player. I guess that's why I'm so disappointed that he sold out with such a cheesy song. He had to have known that "Our Country" would play right into the laps and minds of the fake Wal-Mart patriots who put the Power of Pride bumper stickers on their cars Sept. 12, 2001 yet never flew the flag on or before Sept. 10, 2001.

Aren't those the same people represented by the political party that he supposedly detests?

It makes no sense, and it all adds up to one word: CHA-CHING!

Yeah, that's true. Mellencamp made no money in his career, especially during his commercial peak in the mid-80s.

Again, if this was some pop star, I wouldn't quibble. But it's Mellencamp, someone who helped start Farm Aid, for Christ's sake, and someone who I thought had artistic integrity.

          Guess not.

I hear you! But maybe he figure this is a good time for the song to be pushed. Exspecialy with all this crap happening in the world. I like the song and commercial.

I felt the urge to maim somebody after repeatedly hearing that song 5 times in the span of 10 minutes. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to play that during every commercial break deserves to be dropkicked in the gonads multiple times.

But therein lies the irony: Mellencamp is a STAUNCH Democrat. He campaigned for Kerry in 2004, and in the past caused Dan Quayle to walk out of one of his shows during an anti-Republican harangue to introduce a song.

Actually a portion of the money made from this comercial is going straight to his farm aid foundation.

That's good. But he's still a sellout, whoring off the single before it even was released on the album.

I guess some people will do anything to remain relevant. Mellencamp does have a future as a jingle writer, I guess.

At least Bob Seger and Mellencamp have something in common; they are both from the Midwest and made money off of Chevy.

It was a man law for me back then, it hasn't changed since; use the remote control when the commercial comes on.

I'm sick of the song as well. This reminds me of the U2 commercial a few years ago for IPOD.

True. But at least Seger waited more than a decade before cashing in with "Like a Rock."
