    Little Brother Update (Getback)

"Just as far as the whole sound we're going for, it's going to sound different because producers besides 9th Wonder are involved," says Pooh, adding that, so far, the album works with beats from Nottz--who just supplied a beat for the new collaboration between Snoop Dogg and R. Kelly, "That's That"--and recent G-Unit addition Illmind. "It's hard to describe the sound we're going for, but all the beats are lively and colorful and almost vibrant."
Coleman says the beats they've received from longtime Little Brother member and Justus League co-founder 9th Wonder haven't worked on that level. So far, he has landed only one beat on the album's first eight tracks.
"I don't know if he has them or not, but it just didn't grab us. We never had that feeling from the beats he gave us, and, for this album, we're not going to settle, whether you're 9th Wonder or Just Blaze. We have to be able to fit it into what we're doing," says Coleman.
"9th decided to record beats for multiple albums with people. The uniqueness of what we had was gone, you know," says Pooh, at home in Cary. "We opened it up and made it a free ballgame and told him, 'You can get as many tracks as you want on this album, but you have to do it the way we want it done.' So far, he hasn't done that."
They better not break up, I'll be a little upset.

Wow. So they have a producer who has worked with Snoop and R. Kelly, and a producer from G-Unit? Don't like the sounds of that.

I especially don't like the sounds of Pooh basically saying 9th isn't cutting it anymore.. kind of like leaving him behind or something. This new direction they're headed.. I didn't wanna speculate in the other thread but now with more insight from this article, it sounds like they are trying to go for a mass appeal.

      .
Umm..Illmind has been working with Little Brother for quite a while now though. Just so happen, he signed a deal with G-Unit. Nottz has already did some work with them also.

A Little Brother album doesn't have to be ALL 9th wonder. If he has a few tracks, a few tracks from Khyrsis, a few from Illmind (been feeling their beats more then 9th's anyway) throw in a Nicolay beat and then some from some other guys, it should be okay.

Phonte said somewhere, they got a suprise producer on their album that he didn't want to mention yet, no telling who that is. Hopefully they can get a Pete Rock and Premo beat on there also.

I think Little Brother feels 9th might be holding back and saving his better beats for bigger name artists. 9th even said Phonte is the leader of the group.

As far as them going for a mass appeal...I doubt it. Not like they are getting pop stars to jump on the album so teenagers will buy it. They just want to try a different direction.

We have to breathe and think for a second. Little Brother could be jumping the shark and heading mainstream, but we don't know yet.

What we do know is that they are doing what everyone expected. There was going to be a time where they'll rely on other producers along with 9th Wonder to make an album. Now is that time and I think it makes perfect sense.

People are beginning to get hip to Little Brother. So, now you have to attract that audience. As long as the music stays fresh, clean, and truthful then we don't have a problem.

A beat doesn't make bad lyrics.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

Welp we will see when the actual album comes out won't we? I doubt as well that Little Brother's direction would stray anywhere but from good music, I have faith in Phonte, as he sounds and talks (on his myspace blogs) about as "real" as a hip-hop artist can get.

Illmind has produced three Little Brother songs (one of which, is one of my favorite beats ever: "Can't Let Her").. while Nottz has produced (although I don't know how much) on the Soldiers of Fortune album.

I guess I just think, if Phonte and Pooh feel like 9th isn't giving them their best effort and they want to have more then just one producer doing most of the beats, I don't see anything wrong with it.

How in the hell did illmind sign with G-Unit? That makes no sense whatsoever. As far as little brother goes, 9th better not be out of the group.

Thats some real hypocritical shyt from these dudes. Weren't these the same kats preaching about letting the music "be what it be"? Wow. Didn't Te just spit about how everybody wants to change 9th's style up? That they were making money and weren't going to change...and to to save the criticism? Sounds like the other two are a little jelly that one guy is the new hot producer, and prolly getting paid MAJORLY from way bigger projects, while the other two exist on in mediocre record sales. I'd love for somone to tell Pooh his weak *** rhymes aren't really the direction we're looking for, lol...Phonte would have a heart attack.

I don't mind them suddenly being more selective, but don't front on what got you there, son...and definitely don't hate on the strongest part of your sound. Without 9th, they'd probably still be local. Money is a mofo. Alot of reviewers said the beats needed more energy. I guess they DO listen to criticisms...but their just way too arrogant to admit it.

I don't know if I'd call it jealousy, but it just doesn't sit right with me the way Pooh was talking about 9th in those quotes. I don't think he could've been taken out of context either, as he was basically just straight up saying 9th wasn't fitting in to their plans.

lol, talk about making drama out of nothing.

They want to make an album that sounds different musically.

9th Wonder is like most producers; they have one sound. An album full of one sound gets boring after a while to the masses.

9th Wonder is one of the founding members of the group, the justus league, and is pretty much the one who got them out of the underground.

Yea, I know this, but what does it mean exactly?

Does it mean he has to produce every track on every album for the rest of their rapping careers?

Calm down, people. Rappers rap over beats. Producers make beats for rappers to rap on. 9th Wonder is a producer. Tough luck to him he isn't versatile enough to give the rappers something different than the same sound.

Guys are acting like it's a crime for two rappers to want other producers on their album.
