    The future of Music CD's

Everytime I go to FS and BB, the CD section is basically a ghost town (especially with the 30 and under crowd).

I'm interested to see if CD sales dipped or increased this year.
The mom and pop record store I use to go to closed down after people discovered other ways of obtaining music.

I just wonder if we will ever see a day where all music is purchased from a service like iTunes and music CD's are no longer produced.

The same thing was said about vinyl to eight-track, and then eight-track to cassette, and then cassette to CD...

I hope not. While I dont buy as many CD's as I used to, I really enjoy going out on release day and picking up my favorite bands CD. Something nice about being able to have the liner notes, artwork, and CD. Completes the package, you know?

There was a very good article on this in an issue of Wired earlier this year. Record companies are starting to see the writing on the walls and their idea to keep pace with online digital sales is going to be more robust packaging. The cover had Beck on it and there was an article on how he tried to release some of his older albums(Sea Change, Midnight Vultures) with DVDs packaged but his company refused because there was no need to add to the production cost when it wouldn't add to the price on the shelves. Even with Guero they only let him release a $20 version with a DVD in a package that was like a hardback book. His album released about 2 months ago came with a DVD and the linear notes were blank but came with one of many possible combinations of stickers so you can make your own cover, and it was sold at standard CD price(I paid $10 for it when it came out if I remember correctly, $11 at the most).

DVDs will be included at no extra cost(already happening, but it will keep growing), you may even see Dual Discs become the dominant format(which I hate because having a CD with no art on it is stupid). There is really nothing they can do to stop it, especially once bands start selling packages online that give you the songs and files to print your own linear notes. Record companies can only try to slow down the extinction of CDs. The only thing keeping CDs alive now is the portion of America without high speed internet and people who prefer to buy an album that comes with liner notes and CD art.

I'm wondering what will happen to CD's. I've just recently started building my CD collection over the past 3 years and now mp3's are dominating.

If they go digital, they should at least have uncompressed file format options for download.

It just feels odd though to have mp3's rather than CD's. There is something about putting that CD in my car and having a CD case with real CD's inside that feels good rather than have mp3's playing on my winamp player.

I guess with mp3 players it shows artwork and maybe other info so the transition may work.

I just hope that movie downloads don't kill the DVD format. There's something a bit too sterile and nerdy about watching a movie on a computer screen.

              Just my opinion tho.

You won't think it is so bad when you can download a movie in 20 minutes and wirelessly send it to your HDTV anywhere in the house and watch it there.

I'm not a huge DVD buyer, but I love me some CDs, I would hate to see them go, but their days are definitely numbered.

I don't think that DVDs are in danger anytime soon. While MP3 players are gaining popularity because they hold more music and take up less space than CD players and can be used in cars as well (at times, and if not, then there are MP3 CDs and whatnot). With DVDs, people are gonna keep buying them for the sake of watching them on their big TVs in their home theaters

I guess I'm just too nerdy then because I watch most of my movies on my computer including actual DVD's with cheap panasonic headphones lol

I agree. That's the reason why I can't watch any of the movies that I have downloaded until I burn them. I really can't stand watching them on the computer and I have a screen the size of a good-sized tv. CD's on the otherhand I don't really care about but I like buying dvds and having the cases and everything else.
