:y4: That made me laugh... "Hey, ****face!"...

I know what you're saying. That's my whole reaction to it. It's a horrible word, if they could have been around to comprehend it... like you said. I agree 100%. But nowadays, they don't think about it like that, and just use it freely.

So yeah, I agree with everything you just said man. Excellent post.

Maybe I just live in a different area, but around here, calling a Black person a ****** is considered racist.
You hear it ALL of the time over here on campus... but only amongst the black guys... I mean, you don't hear me, or a hispanic guy, or any other race using the word... but when I'm playing ball... I hear it used at least once every few minutes. And it's not ****** per se... It's *****. Derivitive from the same term... but viewed differently amongst the guys I guess.

But yeah, on campus, and on the courts, I hear it ALL of the time. And I'm close to these guys, and would never have any "ill-will" towards them, but that doesn't mean I'm going to start using it. Like Blzer, I think it should dissappar.

Where are you? Aren't you in like Canada? Here in LB you hear it every other word in certain neighborhoods by whites, blacks, asians, mexicans etc. Even the suburb kids will use it just to sound cool. Personally I feel it just sounds ignorant to use that word and whoever uses it goes down a notch in my book.

I'm from Vancouver. People here don't go around calling each other ******s.

Either eliminate it, or make it universal for all ethnic backgrounds.

This is 2006, it's so widely used, that if I hear it used, I don't assume anything about black/white or racism (and definately don't think of BET)... I hear it and I think that they're just referring to their boys... Either eliminate it, or don't be offended when another race uses it... BUt what do I know...
That is my problem with it. I won't use it and I think others also shouldn't use it. But beyond that, if a white person can't use but a black person can, that is a form of racism. That gets to the whole problem of reverse racism, but that is another argument.

I've never gotten it either. What is the big thing with white guys feeling disrespected or left out because they aren't "allowed" to say it? And if people think that it's limited to black people then they are sadly mistaken, I've attended a few predominantly white schools and white kids will call themselves and their friends "*****".

First off, i'm black and I feel that the word is uncomfortable in certain many situations. However, that doesn't mean that I don't use the word. I use it all of the time around my close black friends at home. I guess you can say we use it as a form of 'love.'

The reason why I don't believe that it can be seen as positive regardless of race is because a lot of people don't use it in a postive way. I guess this is something that I have learned over my past 3 years at Pitt. I've been in numerous situations where I am around my white friends and they will slip up and use the word in a derogatory way. Not towards me, but towards another black person. They will immediately apologize once they remember that I'm in the room (This has happened at least 15-20 times) but it still hurts hearing it being used that way.

The fact that it IS still used as a derogatory word by some is why it will never be mutually accepted by society as a word that anyone can used.

Even though I do occasionally use the word I agree that it should be eliminated. The only problem with this is that it is already embedded in our society. What happens when in 10 years a teenage boy buys a 'classic' rap cd? He's gonna hear the word used repeatedly in a way which will make him wanna say it.

But why is it such a big deal if a black guy gets offended when a white guy says it? Why does the white guy need to say it, does it make him feel good about himself or something?

My question (to piggy back off this) why do white people need to say the word are you trying to be cool? Are you trying to act black? There is nothing funnier then a white kid acting black cuz he watched ten minutes of BET then goes and gets his hair braided and pants sagging, Yall remember when Justin Timberlake got his hair braided That was comicial. White people just need to be themselves stop acting Black stop trying because you look dumb doing it. I think I offended some people but Im just telling the truth.

I don't know... on my floor in my dorm, I'm pretty much the only guy that doesn't act "black". As a matter of fact, you can call me a "double-stuffed Oreo". I couldn't even begin to learn how to act, talk, walk, or whatever like one... it's just not worth my time. I don't need to do it to fit in, either; so, that's a very inexcusable reason for a Caucasian to use that word.

Our society has changed because of our generation of rap and MTV. Go to any local middle school during after-hours and notice how the kids are talking, dressing, etc. Whatever color they are, they all are either complete nerds, or they're in their pre-mature stages of becoming some other "igga"... whether it's "n" or "w".

The fact of the matter is they're watching much more than just 10 minutes of BET, and I don't think I've even watched 10 minutes of it myself. It's a shame, IMO.

Agreed. It seems like all kids, no matter what color they are, are afraid to act like themselves.

Man just to get slightly off subject I hate that word wigger. That to me means a white person is acting black..So all black people are ******s to white people. I always hated that word in high school. or the word ****** knocking when you go door to door knock and run away, or ****** pile when you dog pile on each other. I know us as black people didnt invent those terms..Anyway back to subject at hand....
