    Greatest Speech in History

Anyone who's a quote\speech freak like me knows there's a few really incredible speechs and quotes to go along.

    What are your favorites?

In my opinion the Jimmy Valvano speech in the 93 Espy show is the best speech in history. It's everything all rolled into one, emotional, funny, motivational, and more.

Seeing it again for the first time in a long time seals it for me, it's an amazing speech.

be who you are and say what you feel, because those who matter don't mind, and those that mind, don't matter.

      Re: Greatest Speech in History

Not so much a speech, but an extended quote. It also isn't one of the greatest in history, but it is a damn good one! Anyways, here it is:

"I still remember the day this song was written. We always kinda asked each other, "I wonder what people will think?" Cause we're all individuals, we've all got our own opinions. That's why all those men, and all those women are overseas. So we can stand in this room and be free. But I wanted to let everyone know something, "I can still remember that day, it was kinda like an epiphany, got really really clear. You may have all the family in the world around you, you may have your friends. But you gotta remember something. Every single day, you are given, when you wake up you always look at yourself first in the mirror, and unless you can make yourself happy, you're never gonna be able to make anyone else happy. So no matter what anyone tells you about this song, remember something, it's about hope. And it's about moving on, and it's also about accepting that sometimes you're gonna have to go to an extremely dark place to find who you really are. I think that some people, I don't think they failed, or that they didn't reach that moment in their life. I just feel like maybe, they didn't reach it in time. And for the ones that are still here, and for the ones that remember those that are gone. If you would please, South Carolina, since we're all inside. And we're all together, can I see all the lighters lit up? And can I see all the cell phones in the house, can you show me what the stars look like tonight? Since we're all inside and we can't see, lets make our own stars. All the lighters, all the cell phones, LIGHT EM UP... LET ME SEE THE STARS!... This song's called 45." - Brent Smith's lead-in into 45 on 3/3/05...

A tie between The Gettysburg Address and Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream." Churchill's address to his British citizens during the Battle of Britain was amazing, too.

Among recent speeches, though, it's tough to top Jimmy V at the ESPY's. But it pales to The Gettysburg Address, "I Have a Dream" and Churchill's address during The Blitz.

        Take care,

That speech in Independence Day always gets a raised fist from me.

Churchill gave several incredible speeches. But my favorite is his "Finest Hour" speech delivered in the House of Commons on 6/18/40.

What General Weygand called the Battle of France is over. I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, "This was their finest hour."
              Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.
Dash: [muttering] Which is another way of saying no one is.

Does Bill Paxton's speech from independence day count?

If we can include movie stuff, Al Pacino's "Inches" speech from Any Given Sunday is superb.

I can't believe people are putting speeches from Hollywood movies above the oratory of Martin Luther King, Lincoln and Churchill.

                    That sh*t mattered. Movies don't.

The question wasn't, "What is the most IMPORTANT speech in history?" It is, "What is the GREATEST speech in history." Greatest as in, most audibly appealing. Do you honestly think anyone thinks a movie speech has had anywhere near the effect that a real speech has? No. But, some of them do sound better to the ear, that much you must agree upon.

                        Sometimes I wonder.

And importance equals greatness. Period. Do people remember Joe Montana for putting up numbers during the regular season? No -- they remember clutch performances in four Super Bowl victories.

I was joking about Independence Day (and the first one to do so in the thread!). Greatest Speech?

How do you rank them? It's impossible. So I'm sticking with Independence Day or Hackman's inspirational rant at the end of Hoosiers.

My little league coach once gave a kick *** speech during the top of the 9th inning when we were three outs away from winning the only game we'd win all year. The ending had to do with free pizza and beating the number one team. I don't remember it word for word, but we won the day!
