EDIT - I debated long and hard over Feast and Superman Returns. After watching it again in HD, I have to give the slight nod to Superman.

Best movie of the year by a mile was The Proposition.

Well, it was released 2006 most parts of the world.

The Proposition
Australian director John Hillcoat established a relationship with musician Nick Cave as a video clip director. His first feature GHOSTS OF THE CIVIL DEAD was co-written by and featured Cave; now the two have collaborated again as screenwriter and director of THE PROPOSITION.

The proposition is this: after capturing two brothers of the wanted Burns gang, Charlie, (Guy Pearce) and Mikey, (Richard Wilson), British policeman Capt.
Stanley, (Ray Winstone) offers to pardon them both if their older brother Arthur, (Danny Huston) is killed by Charlie before Christmas. Otherwise, Mikey will swing.

Thwarting Stanley's plans for an honourable playout of his deal with Charlie is local landowner, Eden Fletcher, (David Wenham). When things fall apart Stanley is increasingly concerned for his fragile wife Martha, (Emily Watson).


This extraordinary film explores the elliptical nature of class, race, colonisation and family. It has at its core the harshness of the outback landscape reflected in the nature of man, a landscape which is almost surreally captured by cinematographer Benoit Delhomme.


All the performances are strong but once again Guy Pearce brings a strange power to Charlie and Ray Winstone is truly fine as Stanley. And Danny Huston is oddly perfect as Arthur.


It's a strange, unsettling film, ultimately quite moving, it's impossible not to respond to it strongly. It's not an easy access film. It's violent and the motivation of the characters is sometimes oblique.

I actually keep a tally of the movies each year as I go. I rank them in overall enjoyment of the movie for myself, not necessarily *best* made movie.

I actually keep a tally of the movies each year as I go. I rank them in overall enjoyment of the movie for myself, not necessarily *best* made movie.

That's how I rank my movies. I don't care if critics loved them or it's up for an Oscar or what not. It's how much I enjoyed the movie. That's how it should be, not "You should like this movie because it's up for an Oscar".

I have been trying to get around and watch Thank You For Smoking. I remember when I first saw the trailer for it months before its major release I was laughing so hard. It was only in the theaters in my town for a short time and I just haven't been in a DVD watching mood lately, outside of Christmas movies. Maybe I'll see it by the end of the year.

I have been trying to get around and watch Thank You For Smoking. I remember when I first saw the trailer for it months before its major release I was laughing so hard. Wow, I didn't see many movies this year and almost half were "children" movies. Happy Feet, Cars, Flushed Away, Ice Age 2, Monster House Curious George, Open Season and Charlottes Web are children's movies I saw not listed. I think I only saw one other adult movie not on my list and that was Hostel. (EDIT: World Trade Center as well)

I think The Good Shepherd, will end up making the list though.

Out of those 10, I'd get the top 9 on DVD and I would rent 16 Blocks.

I only saw 11 movies, I think. The other being POTC: Dead Man's Chest, which felt more like a teaser for the third movie than an actual, stand-alone film. I didn't get to see a couple of movies I wanted to see, namely The Prestige, and I hope I can catch at least The Pursuit of Happyness over Christmas break.

There have really been some pretty good movies this year. Thing has been they're pretty few and far between. I was able to make a pretty good list of movies I really liked though:

The "Worst of" list is far more exciting though. I have seen a ton of new movies this year, because I get to go for free. So that has lead to seeing some real stinkers. Without further ado, they are: (1 is the worst, 10 is...well, the best I guess)

1. The Benchwarmers. Hated, hated, hated this movie. I didn't find one thing funny.

2. Doogal. I heard it was bad but wow. Supposedly the original British version is good, but the English version was terrible.

3. John Tucker Must Die. Cliche after cliche after cliche and the main character is a 28-year old playing a 17-year old.

4. Failure to Launch. This movie was awful. I could see the jokes coming from a mile away and you knew what was going to happen within the first 2 minutes of the movie. Also keep in mind there is a Terry Bradshaw rear nude scene.

5. The Devil Wears Prada. I don't get what the hype was about. Obsession with fashion in this movie is insane. Maybe I didn't get it.

6. You, Me and Dupree. I typically like Owen Wilson but this movie did nothing for me. A couple of chuckles, maybe.

7. Grandma's Boy. There weren't many laughs in this for me.

8. Nacho Libre. There were a few funny parts but overall a mess.

9. Barnyard. Male cows with udders. Enough said.

On a side note, Pirates 2 just didn't do it for me, either. It was a decent movie but seemed to go nowhere plot wise. That, and the characters couldn't figure out who they wanted to be. Overall it was ok but not worth the build-up it got.

Pursuit of Happyness HAS to be on there somewhere. One of the BEST movies this year. Will Smith was simply PHENOMENAL.
