Anyone have a bad experience with a car purchase of an auction?
If so, willing to share? The reason I ask is that recently my friend got ripped off for his new Benz, so I'm using his mistake to my advantage and therefore heading out to an auction. Anyone bought a lemon off an auction or is that like an oxymoron in regards to car auctions? ThanksTags: None -

I think it depends on what you are looking for. If talking about a high end car, I wouldn't buy one from an auction. Those kinds of cars generally are expensive to maintain and have a lot of upkeep. If you're not buying it new from the dealer or certified pre-owned, I am not sure what type of protection you get.
Used cars are always a risk anyway. A used car from an auction, I would imagine the risk would be increased. I just play it safe, and buy new cars from the dealer at this point. -

To be honest, if an opportunity comes up where I can afford a high end car with the type of money I'm going there with, I'll jump on it in a second. After all, that's my goal going in there The maintaince cost I'll worry about once I get my car. Like G35 for 8 grand, not bad at all...but I'm being realistic and looking to get either 1999 Audi A4, 1999 BMW 325 I(or 525I I wish),2000+ I30T, or maybe a 2002+ Nissan Altima/Maxima....
P.S. You don't get no warranties, do you? But supposedly the hour before the actual selling, there is a checkup of all cars listed...I guess that helps.Comment

I guess it's the skeptic in me, but I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for. 8 grand for a G35 would raise an eyebrow, auction or no auction.
Again, maybe it's just me, but I'd rather know what I am getting, I'd rather have legal recourse, and have warranty protection. Which is why I only buy from dealers, and only buy new. Not to mention, dealers are practically giving cars away at this point.
I would be cautious, and in my opinion, an auction is a big big time buyer beware experience.
BTW, stay away from the 525i. POS.Comment

Surely, if I could I would go to a dealer, but dealers pay the invoice that's close to the amount that can be attained in an auction...The dealers just add their own share, to justify the warranties and what not. Thoughout my life, I haven't needed a warranty with any purchase, but I guess it's kind of different when talking about such a big purchase as a car.
P.S. I meant to say 540I, but the new 525I is just fire...Looks like the e46.Comment

Is there any part of you that's not pessimist?

When I spend that much on a car, I want to know my investment is protected. Otherwise might as well just piss the money away. I'll pay more now, to be protected from paying a ridiculous sum down the road due to mechanical or engineering failure. I guess my point, is buyer beware when talking about a big ticket item from an auction.
1999 525 is a pos btw. New one isn't much better. Not enough engine for that car, plus I really hate the Idrive BS. Which is why I went away from BMW on this last purchase.Comment
