    PSP or an iPod 30GB?

I am faced with a difficult choice in regards to a Christmas present that I am promised. Recommendations are equal, so I am turning to the board in hopes that someone has experience with both products.

I have a little bit less than 10GB of music and about 66GB of video on my PC. I would like to archive my music on a portable device, but I'm more interested in having portable video than listening to music. It seems that the iPod would fit my needs perfectly.

On the other side, I love surfing the internet when I have some downtime. I'm told that the PSP is the way to go for this feature. Plus, the PSP plays games.

To equal the capacity of the iPod, I would need at least seven 4GB memory sticks for at least $100 a piece. But then the iPod doesn't have wireless internet and it doesn't play games.

I can't decide where the trade-off should be. If anybody on the board has experience with both products, please give me your thoughts. For example, maybe the the wi-fi on the PSP sucks, or the video is awful. Or perhaps the PSP battery life blow the iPod out of the water. I'd like to hear your opinions.

    Thanks in advance.

Re: PSP or an iPod 30GB?

I faced the same questions a couple of weeks ago and I decided to buy a PSP instead. It's the ultimate swiss army knife of portables. I bought the PSP with the intention of downloading music, videos playing games and surfing the net. It does it all. You can even buy a GPS and watch certain TV shows on the PSP (requires a subcription fee).

The icing on the cake for me was hearing that the PSP and PS3 were going to have a greater share with each other. I like the look of the PSP better than I do the ipod, plus i've read that the ipods don't hold up well over a period of time which concerned me.

All in all i'm very pleased with the PSP and the full color screen is just nasty.

      Neither.

Creative Zen Vision M: 30GB MP3 Player(Has an HD LCD screen which obviously KILLS the iPods in playing videos.)

just remember the 66gb of avi divx or mpeg files won't quite match the file formats of either ipod or psp.

you may be looking at less or even more.

mp4 is known to convert to a bigger file size..

But does it have wireless internet like the PSP?

The GPS sounds sweet as well!

Wireless Internet is nothing to give up in exchange for 30 GB's of memory that holds photo's, videos, music, FM Tuner/Recorder, Microphone, Contact Organizer... all of which is displayed on a HIGH DEFINITION LCD.

I agree. I got my Zen last week and love it. The screen has twice as many colours as an Ipod and supporting divx/xvid out of the box is awesome.

No stuffing around with iTunes either. Once you have the Creative software installed, it's just drag and drop.

And... also unlike iTunes, you can share files with any other computer.

14 hours audio and 4 hours video life, on a 5 hour full recharge. My new favourite toy and perfect for when I am bored on a flight in cattle class.

My wife bought me a PSP for Christmas, and I must say it is quite nice. I already own a 1 GB Sony Bean, and between the 1 GB memory card that came with the PSP and the Bean I have instant access to over 800 songs and the ability to surf the net and play games all for under a total of $400.

I own both and use it for completely different reasons...

If you're more of a music junkie and dont want to play games, but just watch some movies/tv shows and listen to music, then the ipod is what you want...

if you want music, good games (i actually like the psp's lineup and its only improving), videos, and alotta cool downloadable features, then psp is the way to go cuz it allows you to do sooo much its not funny

Do you use the wireless internet feature at all? I keep coming back to that as the deciding feature. I don't know if I'll play alot of games, but I do surf alot through my cell phone.

How is the video on the PSP compared to the iPod? Obviously, the PSP screen is larger, but is the quality comparable?

Can I use the PSP memory stick like a hard drive? I know with the iPod you can load just about anything to transfer to another computer. Does Sony mandate a proprietary format for the memory stick, or can I save something to it and then transfer it to another PC?

Another thing that has me really excited is the GPS add-on. I want a budget GPS unit for trips, but to meld my video, music, games, internet, and (future) GPS into one $250 unit is very appealing.

Don't have any desire for a psp myself. I do want to know though if I wanted to still listen to the podcast but don't want to get an ipod, which would work best? I keep hearing about the CZen but nobody I know around me has one. Just preparing for when my ipod hits the dust.
