    Internet splitter question

Just a quick question. I have cable internet in my house, and I'm upstairs and have a single cat5E jack which my laptop is connected to. I just got a ps2 which i want to hook up to the internet. Can i just purchase one of those cheap cable splitters and be able to be online with both my laptop and ps2? (at the same time). In college my dorm room had only one internet jack and we used a splitter and both of our internets worked fine, but i'm reading on other sites that you can only one of the jacks will be "live". Please help!

You'll need a router, unless I'm completely not understanding what you're asking.

I'm pretty sure you'll need a router. The cheap splitter does work for cable tv though. Otherwise that would put a lot of Internet router companies out of business...

Yeah, a splitter won't work because you don't need to split the signal from the cable to use on 2 computers, you need to split the signal that comes out of the modem and to do that, as has been said, requires a router or a data switch.

You'll definately need a router for that.

Does your single CAT5 jack go straight into the cable modem? If so, then you'll need a router.
