    Dreamgirls

I know this site isn't exactly the demographic that likes movies like Dreamgirls, but I enjoyed this movie........

I'm normally not too much of a fan of musicals, but in this case it was actually enjoyable...........

The movie was deep enough, it had several interesting sub-plots from Jimmy Early to the ups and downs of Effie and Curtis Taylor.........

I saw in the Golden Globe thread that it got a nomination for best musical or comedy....... I think Jennifer Hudson (Effie) has a legit case for best supporting actress. In my opinion, she, not Beyonce (Deena Jones), was the star of this movie......... Beyonce wasn't bad at all but if anyone was deserving of an award, it would be Ms. Hudson, though admittedly I haven't seen the other movies since I'm not a big movie buff..........

If you're on the fence about seeing this one, I say go see it. And if you do, I guarantee you will think that Jennifer Hudson was the star of this movie, even though it advertises Beyonce, Jamie Foxx, and Eddie Murphy (Jimmy Early), who did a fine job himself............

I totally agree. I ABSOLUTELY HATE MUSICALS and I loved this film. This was probably the 2nd best movie i've seen this year (after the Departed). Go see the film with your girlfriend or your family.

I think its a disgrace that Beyone got the best actress node over Hudson... Not because of her preformance but because her character was not the main focus of the movie. Its like they just looked at who was in the movie and then picked the most recognized name to nominate.

Nah thats not how it works. There can only be one lead actress and the studio decides which actress or actor they are going to designate lead and supporting actress based on name recognition, main focus of the movie and chances they will win the award. The studio did the right thing in this situation imo. Hudson was unbelivable in this movie but she is the lesser known actress, she and Beyonce had about the same amount of time onscreen and Hudson has a much better chance winning Supporting than Lead this year. The studio wants Hudson to win badly and if she was nominated for lead, she would probably lose to Helen Mirren (every critic says Mirren will win the Lead Actress Oscar easily) in the Oscars. She has little competiition at Supporting and has a great chance at winning.

You know, I was all hyped up to see this movie but I read a review that turned my mind against it. I'll rent it tho when it comes to DVD just to see Eddie Murphy who I think should've been given a nomination for best supporting actor or something.

I learned a big lesson about reviews in college, don't pay any attention to them if it's something you may enjoy.

My roomate got me big time. He knew I was a big Rush fan and he came home from the library and asked if I respected the reviewers at Rolling Stone Magazine. I fell hook line and sinker and said, sure. He said, read this, Rolling Stone gave Rush a one star on their Subdivisions Album. They said it was to synthesizer heavy. I agreed it wasn't guitar heavy, but it didn't deserve the one star rating. If I would have listened to that reviewer, I would have missed out on a decent album.

I agree reviews don't always give a good account of a film but the review I read talked about the aspects of the film that I was most interested in which is the parallels between the Dreamgirls story and Motown of the 60s. Also the music sounds more broadwayish from seeing the long trailer at the theatres recently. Like I said i'll definitely rent the flick when it comes to DVD.
