OMG, what did i just do to my ipod?

So I had to reformat the C drive. Reinstalled all my stuff including the newest itunes version. didn't add songs to the itunes and plugged my ipod to it. synced it, and obviously all the songs on my ipod are now gone. not a big deal, i'll just put them back on right? no! now my itunes doesn't even recognize my ipod anymore. what's going on?

Looking at the plethora of responses to this thread, I'm going to assume that no one knows the answer... so i did what was the easiest... reformat, reinstall... done and working.

Yeah, that was what I was going to suggest...but I had no idea if it would work, or make it worse, so I figured I'd let you make the mistakes.

Does apple have a costumer support line?

I own a Mac and use to own an ipod. Here's the deal when syncing a computer with an ipod it's a two edge sword. If you remove one song from your PC and sync your ipod it will remove it from the ipod. That's the way it works if all your songs were deleted because you reformatted your HDD then when you sync both the ipod and PC it will delete all the songs on the ipod.

Don't quote me on this but I think it's part of the DRM in iTunes. Now back to your iPod. You in essence have a corrupt library on your iPod. Only delete songs when both are synced or this problem will happen again.

Look in your iPod manual if you have it. There's a way to reset the iPod and restore it back to factory settings. I'm telling you this because the same thing happened to me until I figured out why my iPod was locked. I was thinking of taking it back to the store and getting another one. Then I read in the manual and discovered how to reset the device.

*NOTE* Resetting an iPod will completely cause all data loss.

That's why I don't sync my iPod, I do everything manually. Not having complete control over your portable music player is a very bad thing.

I've got an iTunes question so I guess this is a good place to ask. A couple nights ago when I wanted to open iTunes I got a message saying it wasn't installed correctly and it needed to be reinstalled and until I do that I won't be able to burn any cds. Now I've had an ipod and itunes for just over a year and never had this problem til two nights ago, anyway my question is if I reinstall iTunes will I end up losing all my music or will it still be there?

I'm fairly certain that if you remove iTunes through the Add/Remove Programs dialogue in WinXP that you will NOT lose your music. In fact I believe upon reinstall iTunes will attempt to automatically import your songs back into the library. I'd make a backup of all your song files in a different folder just in case though.

Well, before re-reformatting, I did the factory reset thing, and it still didn't work... for future reference, this is what happened.

                        1. Reformat hard drive (mp3's were on a separate hdd, so i didn't lose any songs).
                        2. reinstall itunes (i had not imported all my songs yet).
                        3. accidentally synced my ipod to an empty itunes (all songs deleted off my ipod)
                        4. being completely pissed off, i disconnected my ipod without ejecting first.
                        5. i reconnected ipod to computer, itunes no longer recognizes my ipod.
                        6. reset ipod to factory settings
                        7. itunes still doesn't recognize my ipod
                        8. reboot a couple times, still doesn't work
                        9. post on OS
                        10. reformat hdd again.
                        11. everything works great.

So basically, from step 4 to step 9, i wasn't sure what to do. so i did the reformat hdd again.
