    Older Movie Theatres

Are there any left? I'm talking about the theatres that existed as recently as 10 years ago before the huge Palace franchises took over. In the last 7 years 6 major theatres have gone down in the suburban New Orleans area alone. Having been a film buff since I was very young, I prefered the coziness and small town charm of the older structures.

We lost our "hometown" place about a year ago or so.

However, I enjoy going to The Grand better than that old place.

We've got two great ones here in the Lehigh Valley (yes, that's Matt Millen country). The Boyd is in Bethlehem, PA has the upper balcony seats and the giant curtain across and on both sides of the screen. Also, The Roxy in Northampton, PA was apparently used in an A&E special as a backdrop at one time. It still has the recessed band pit area (unused) and a guy that comes in once a week who plays the Wurlitzer prior to the matinee show. Nothing like the old time theatres.

Interesting post. The smaller theatre in our town just got finished with their renovations. It still has a "smaller" feel to it, but they did try and go the way of the stadium typ theatres.

When I lived in FL, there was a dollar theatre that was old and charged a dollar a movie (obviuusly). The movies were mainstream, they were just delayed. Nice place.
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

We still have our 1 screen theater here in town. Building has pretty much been unchanged for the past 40 years or so. The inside has been upgraded, but doesn't have all the hi-tech stuff of the mega theaters.

Popcorn though is top notch. Much preferred over the mega theaters.

About the only time I go to the mega is for a movie I really want to see that I want all the bells and whistles for. Thats about once every couple months tho.

Even new releases are $4 after 6pm. So I can't complain about the sub-standards features.

Wow, a one screener! Do they show current movies or should I say "current movie"? We have one of the older theaters in this area that has survived. It is 17 years old, has ten screens, and is considered ancient. It is a parking lot away from a major mall(at one timed considered part of the mall), but doesn't pull in nearly the people that the mega ones do.

Theres a monster of one in my old hometown of Spokane, WA still. I went to it a few years back when Troy was in the theatres, I paid like $5, it was like an auditorium and was totally packed. It was awesome.

There is one around the corner from me, but it needs serious renovation. The seats are not made for anyone taller than 5'5 or whom weigh more than 120 lbs.
