I'm not a huge REM fan either, but I do know that they wrote some pretty original music and were a banner group of their era.
You can say the same with Kiss though in the 70's. I wasn't that big of a fan, but every lunch box in America had Kiss on them. There wasn't many bands more popular than Kiss in the mid 70's to 1980 besides the sporadic Boston.

I mean, who doesn't want to rock n roll all night and party every day. j/k.

I'm aware of all that, but to me, Kiss was more of an entertainment thing rather than great musical artists. Yeah, they had fun songs, have the Kiss Army, etc... but when it comes down to being innovative and having timeless music, I don't think they fit the bill. But that's my opinion and is what makes culture so great. Everyone can see things their own way and still be right.

Never liked Van Halen....especially Eddie. He always had that smug smirk on his face in the videos.... besides, he stole Valerie Bertanelli from me!

Are you kidding me?? So you would consider r.e.m innovative and timeless??
Kiss deserves to be in the hall, they have (as EG stated) influenced countless bands, have given SEVERAL bands their shot as an opening act, hell....Gene Simmons founded Van Halen for crying out loud.

No I'm not kidding you. What have they done that is so innovative? Music can be good without being innovative. And yes I would consider REM innovative and timeless. Songs like "It's the End of the World and We Know It" and "Losing My Religion" are just a few of their songs that will go down as some of the best of their time. Whereas Kiss may have popular hits, I don't see them as the class of their era, and it seems to me that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame picks the best of each era to be in it. Just because Kiss gives bands a shot or discovers them, doesn't qualify them for the Hall. It has nothing to do with their musical ability, but more their ability to entertain and put on a good show. That is what makes them popular more so than the strength of their music.

I have a pretty strong musical background, so while you may disagree with me, don't act as though my opinions are idiotic. I'd love to go on and on about this and debate all night, but I simply don't have the time, so I will leave my opinion as what it is.

Well despite the name it's more of a "music" hall of fame. There are other RnB, country etc etc types in the Hall as well.

I don't really see why Grandmaster Flash is in there either but at least "The Message" is one of the most influential hip hop/rap songs of all time.

As for Kiss and other prog rock bands...I'm no fan of that kind of music but even I could see the merit to having Kiss in there.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a complete joke. So much so that Black Sabbath didn't get inducted until 2006.

The R&R Hall is a sham. The fact that Van Halen wasn't inducted in their first year of eligibility is proof of that. The fact that acts such as KISS and Alice Cooper, Genesis and the other prog rock groups, are not in is even further proof.
Van Halen is my favorite band of all time, but I really hate Eddie and Alex. More so Eddie pisses me off with his stupid bull****.

KISS is another favorite of mine and hopefully will get there soon enough. Gene Simmons aggravates the hell out of me just cause he whored the KISS legacy enough in the 90's.

Is it because they reformed with David Lee Roth and Wolfgang VanHalen? I don't get the Wolfie thing myself(guess I should look at this last name?,Lol!) I too am a diehard Halen fan,but they sure made some bad moves in the past,eh?

Music is very subjective, so, that's why it's difficult to debate it. One person may feel Bob Seager belongs in the HOF, another may say, he didn't dominate his era.

The one thing I will say about Kiss is that they persevered through the disco era when every thing the Bee Gees did turned to gold and John Travolta was strutting his stuff in Saturday Night Fever and Grease. Kiss's record company forced them in the late 70's to come out with a disco tinged song and they hated it. So many bands converted from rock n roll to disco in that era , I give Kiss credit for still Shouting it Out, Loud. Rod Stewert, Elton John, Blondie, Heart all had their disco period, but Kiss didn't cave in till 1979. Does this still make a case for them for the HOF? I would think it would tip the scale in their favor, but that is my opinion.

I would say they dominated their era in rock n roll music. The album sales should be a good measure if they dominated their era.

You make a good case as well.

There are only two musical acts who have had more albums that have charted GOLD than KISS.

Their names are the Beatles and Elvis Presley.

                        Sounds somewhat deserving to me.

Kiss is just as important, if not MORE important to Rock than Van Halen is/was.

And I LOVE me some Van Halen.

If you want to get into musical backrounds....I myself have been playing music for over 23 years,so I guess that would qualify as a "pretty strong musical backround".

I could care less if a band I like makes the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The honor means nothing since music is so subjective, and the museum and induction ceremony are nothing but another medium for corporate marketing dollars.

                                Take care,
