Coffee Shop Tipping
OK, I did a tipping thing close to three years ago with take out orders, but having observed the tipping habits of people at Starbucks and other coffee houses I have noticed that the vast majority of customers only tip their change even if it's only 10 or 15 cents. I tip a full dollar, but I'm interested in what other OSers do. I've been watching to much Curb Your Enthusiasm.45ONE DOLLAR0%2CHANGE0%11NOTHING0%32The poll is expired.

Re: Coffee Shop Tipping
Never in my many trips to Starbucks has the person who took my order actually been the one who made it. There's always been one person working the register, with another who is making and handing out the orders.Comment

Re: Coffee Shop Tipping
The Dunkin Donuts I go to doesn't accept tips. If I go to a place that accepts tips, I'll usually tip the change but thats all. I don't see a reason to tip anymore.
Bartenders are different IMO because they make most of their money off tips, I believe.Comment

Re: Coffee Shop Tipping
They split the tips. There must not be a tip jar at your Starbucks.Comment

I'm not even a big fan of tipping at restaurants.... But that's a whole other story.Comment

Re: Coffee Shop Tipping
So just because they have a tip jar, I'm obligated to give them tips? What is so tip worthy about the job they are doing? This isn't like bartending where you actually have to know how to make an endless array of drinks. For the most part, Starbucks doesn't have that vast of a selection, and even on what they do have, it's all variations of the same thing. Does Starbucks have some rigorous training regime that I'm unaware of? Do you have to go to special coffee making classes in order to get hired there? Is the staff paid sub-minimum wage where their income is based solely upon the tips that they receive? I really wanna know these things, because if I'm just totally in the dark here, I will absolutely change my ways.Comment

Re: Coffee Shop Tipping
Well, I'm just saying, regardless whether they do or do not, am I somehow obligated to do so if there is one present? Nine times out of ten at a place like Starbucks, I don't even notice if there one or not. Should I be looking for one? What decides whether there is a tip jar or not? Can I put one up at my job and see if people start giving up money?Comment

Re: Coffee Shop Tipping
Same........ they make what they are supposed to make in wages.
Maybe it's because I'm not in that big of a city, but I can't think of a place that has a drive thru (not counting services such as Ruby Tuesday's To GO) that the employees rely on tips for the majority of their take-home pay. Maybe it's different in a BIG big city, though......Favorite Teams:

Re: Coffee Shop Tipping
I personally hate restaurants for this reason and unless it's a special occasion I don't go. The food and beverage business is a racket IMO. While the bartenders and servers are treated like slaves/beggars management on the other hand cleans up.
That's where a major expense of a restaurant lies. I use to work for a major chain called Dave and Busters. We had around 10 managers and a general manager. The floor managers averaged $65k-$80 per year. The general manager made $250k-$275k per year depending on how he controlled spending.
That's one reason why I hate restaurants.Comment
