Lol, all I can say is it's about time. I like Stephen A. when he's working the NBA spots (especially with G. Anthony cuz they really seem like they can't stand each other, and I enjoy the tension). His show though, was just awful imo. So many pauses where you could see Stephen A. trying to find a question, sometimes even trying to look interested. He's just not a "main" guy. He's more of the Charles barkely, speak before thinking man on the side type of guy I think.

I like Rome is Burning as well. Every day I read these forums then at 4:30 I turn to ESPN and see Rome say the exact same things a lot of people around here have said. It's like he reads OS for material.

To the people asking for cancellations of other shows, please don't call for the axe of ATH and PTI. Those are my two top ESPN programs. Yeah I liked Kellerman better than Reali too, but Tony has grown on me. I remember I, Max as well. There was this episode where Michael Holly said soemthing about Max's wife (something to the effect of how Max's wife enjoys Michael in bed) and there was this long awkward pause. I damn near shat on myself.
      PS: You guys are great.

I always seemed to enjoy his show when I watched it... I guess I'm in the minority. He had some pretty good guests, and provided an interesting interview.

What is there to debate? The guy did use the "I don't want to make this a race issue, but ..." card too often. And he is lacking much talent. It doesn't take a lot of skill to yell to try and make your points.

And talk about a hypocrite: Smith is Mr. Tough Guy reporter, yelling to make his points, yet I've seen him cozy and buddy up to so many of his interview subjects like they're pals. What an unprofessional joke.

Smith is a hack. He makes the same tired points that many sportswriters in this country make, just like Paige, Mariotti and all of the other blowhards.

This is an excellent point. I feel that this type of reporting/interviewing is the core of ESPN right now.

I can't think of the show that used to have substance to it. Was it One on One or something like that? I enjoyed that show.

I never watch Rome is burning, but I did the other day, and Jim Gray was on ther filling in. If you ask me, he has some guts in his reporting.

Let's put race aside for a second.

If everybody could come across like they halfway know what they were talking about with his style of delivery, then maybe you would see more SAS clones pop up on the scene.......... it's unique, at least to me.

And he can't occasionally show a cozy side just because he starts out the show as "Mr. Tough Guy?" He doesn't have to be like that all the time, now THAT would become tiresome.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When I see SAS, I see talent. You don't. We can agree to disagree on that one. Not that I'm a SAS disciple or anything, just trying to give the man his props.

He got paid, bottom line... Someone liked what he brought to the party, and offered him a chance to cash in doing it. I'm not mad at him. I didn't care much for him on the NBA Shootaround show, but I guess I think everyone pales in comparison to EJ, Charles and the Jet. When I was still in NY, he would guest host every now and then on 1050 ESPN, and he was tolerable at best. I didn't really appreciate him until I saw Quite Frankly a couple of times.

I think sometimes people allowed their opinions of him that were formed from viewing his previous activities to cloud their judgment of what he did on Quite Frankly. Admittedly, I wasn't a die-hard viewer, but I would watch when he had a good guest. I never saw the over-the-top screaming and raving lunatic that I saw in other areas.

There's something called professionalism, which Smith doesn't display on a regular basis.

First, he yells at and interrupts fellow journalists and broadcast professionals who are trying to make their point. There's nothing unique about that -- it's disrespectful and unprofessional, almost as if the guy with the biggest mouth has the best point. It shouldn't work like that.

Second, as a former print journalist, I know about the rules of professional distance. You're courteous and professional with your guests, but they're not your best buddies or pals. It's impossible to be objective, asking tough, truth-seeking questions, with a buddy.

It would be one thing if SAS never was considered a professional journalist and was more of a puff host like Stuart Scott or Dan Patrick. I don't expect professional distance from pseudo-reporter Ken Doll clowns like that.

But when Mr. Sports Journalism SAS starts buddying up to guests, that just exposes him for the fraud that he is.

I think we're forgetting that Smith's show was a late night talk show that dealt with sports, and not a sports reporters type of show.

So that means that Stephen A. Smith wasn't hired to do the show because of his journalistic credentials? He was hired because he was a good interviewer or buddy-buddy with athletes?

So what are his credentials to be a broadcaster on ESPN, again?

Its a late-night talk show, like Letterman or Leno but with sports as a backdrop. Which means the point of the show was to be entertaining and not to showcase his skills as a journalist. So yeah he was hired because he was a good interviewer and buddy- buddy with athletes.

And if you're watching ESPN expecting to see world class journalist you should have quit that about 10-15 years ago.

Anyone remember the show ESPN used to have with Gary Miller? I believe it was called Up Close or something like that. I still remember the show that got it canceled when a fight broke out between his guests on the show, it was 2 boxers I believe.
