    the new era of TV

I think most TV shows are going to have to go the way of Cable shows and 24, where they don't show re-runs during the season. Everyone got used to shows taking breaks and showing repeats but it re-runs just seem to anger viewers now. I think shows are going to have to re-think how they film the shows and when they film shows now. I'm thinking most networks will go to straight through episodes for most of their shows (action, drama) in the near future. LOST tried to do something like this, this year but it had the exact wrong impact. 6 episodes and then 3 month break sucks and seems to be pointless.

    Your thoughts?

A good show, Commander in Chief ultimately suffered from breaks between episodes and lost it's early momentum.

That's why 24 went to the extended premiere/finale format and late start.

Season 3's waits were absolutely painful for us fans.

I heard LOST was moving to the non-stop schedule starting next year. But maybe that was just wishful thinking on my part.

consistency is key or people will find something that is.

Arrested Development sorta suffered through this phase late on in season 3

I believe with Season 4...since Season 3 was the last one I can remember with those excruciating breaks.

I read that too. They admitted the long break wasn't good.

I don't think shows are going to change that much. Having no re-runs hurts a network financially. Its more important for dramas that have a lot of continuity involved like 24 and Lost to not suffer long layoffs. Its not important for comedies or other shows where they are largely independent of one another. Having a long opening for 24 is also crucial since they need time to setup the plot and hook the viewer.

One major reason 24 was pushed back was baseball. Any network that has playoff baseball sees a major shutdown in its primetime programming which can be a hassle. The birth of "reality" television allows networks to produce cheap shows for half a year or to just fill in the blanks as necessary.
