Re: IGN Top 25 Rap Albums

I was going to say that someone should tell IGN to stop trying to pretend they like Hip Hop or even understand it, but the list wasn't terrible.

Was it great? No. The top 10 was a bit shaky, but I give them props for even having some of the albums they listed on the list.

I was expecting more current mainstream guys to be on it. They gave good love to the past and even some groups and rappers most people ignored during their prime.

So, ok list. Not too bad.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Didn't see Gang Starr coming in at #1. And it was good to see Dr. Ocatgon there, much-deserved. You owe it to yourself to check out that Dr. Octagon album if you never have.

I was surprised to see no Kanye West. Granted, he's new and some people are tired of hearing about him, but they don't make better rap *albums* than his, especially the last one.

I was shocked to see Dr. Octagon when I clicked the link.

Although I don't agree with the order of some of these albums or with some of the albums that did make it on here, I do respect this list along with what's included in their Honorable Mentions section. It seems to me that the guys who put this list together actually followed hip-hop throughout the years, did their research, and put a lot of thought and effort into creating it. Well done, IGN. (I can't believe I said that.)

Plenty of people have made better rap albums than him. He's extremely overrated.

Good call. Even putting him in the same sentence as De la or Tribe is an insult. Kanye is more glitz than talent, and his ryhmes are nothing compared to the greats.

Good list, I personally don't agree with the order and Reasonable Doubt is better than the Black Album IMHO. Suprised to see no 2pac on the main list, not that I'm dissapointed.

And honestly his beats aren't that great at all. When he does beats by himself all he does is take a section of a song, loop it, and then add drums. His best beats have been made with help(Jaydee and Jon Brion).

Why is Illmatic at 11? Easily a top 5 album. Where is Only Built for Cuban Linx? And the Black Album was not better then RD or The Blueprint.

Wow, the way the list was shaping up, (Paid in Full at 13, illmatic at 11) I knew #1 was going to be an album from back in the day. I thought for sure Kool G Rap was gonna make an apperance on the list.

Good list and good ****ing looking out on Doc Oct, didn't see that coming at all.
Cameras or guns, one of them is gonna shoot me to death.

From looking at the overall list it appears the creators intended to include only one album from a group to cover as many artists as possible. And as far as Wu-Tang goes, Enter the 36 Chambers was the one.

I personally have a lot of disagreements, but I commend the list. It's a lot to think about when putting these type of lists together. And they did get a good amount of quality albums listed in both parts.

                              Public Enemy
                              Eric B & Rakim
                              Dr. Dre (Chronic)

All of these should be top 5 IMO.
