People reference this game all the time on MMORPG.com. It has its following.
The novel Snow Crash that they mention in the Wikipedia article is one of my favorite books and does create a cyberpunk universe that is quite compelling. If and when, in the future, the technology does exist where the virtual world of Snow Crash can be recreated, all other "gaming" experiences will be obsolete.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

What I find amazing about Second Life is that people actually are making serious money by designing and selling costumes for characters and buying and selling virtual real estate -- all in the virtual world.

I read a story around Christmas that said Second Life had its first real millionaire. A woman had amassed $1 million worth of virtual real estate in Second Life. She would earn $1 million in real cash if she sold it all.

I'm still trying to figure out how Second Life works, and I don't have the time or desire to delve into it, but becoming a millionaire by selling something that doesn't really exist? That's whacked, man.

          Take care,

Ironic. I was just reading an article on this in Inc. magazine.

In my advertising class we were learning about how big of a deal it has gotten to be in the last year. For example, big name companies/corporations are doing advertising in the game/world.

Its crazy. They will introduce new products that aren't even out, and introduce them first on 2nd Life.

Annnnnnd...I guess professors like teach classes on them? Apparently a Harvard proff does. Its weird as hell.

That Wikipedia page to which you linked showed that Second Life's membership was 1 million in October 2006. By January 2007, just three months later, it was up to 3 million.

That is NUTS growth, with tons of revenue streams for both the creators of Second Life and its members.

The whole thing is pretty fascinating, even though I don't want my time and money to get sucked into it.

I think you mean coincidence... it's not ironic.
