Both I suppose. I mean, the stage was pretty big for this album and while that doesn't necessarily mean NIN pushed boundaries concerning their music, the marketing of the album prior to its release is something that will definitely be talked about many years down the road. In that sense, yes they chartered new territory. The music is 100% NIN.

Since I've been loving this album since I got my hands on it, I'm curious to hear from the big NIN fans here. How does this album stack to the rest of Reznor's stuff? The only other NIN album I have is The Downward Spiral and I do believe I like Year Zero better.

To me the album loses a lot of steam around track 9 and beyond. Better than the Downward Spiral? Not a chance. Broken is his best work IMO. Year Zero is good but not great.

I disagree, I think it's one of their best works. I've listened to it about 100 times already I think.

Here's a quote I found from Trent on the story behind Year Zero:

It takes place about 15 years in the future. Things are not good. If you imagine a world where greed and power continue to run their likely course, you’ll have an idea of the backdrop. The world has reached the breaking point—politically, spiritually and ecologically. Written from various perspectives of people in this world, Year Zero examines various viewpoints set against an impending moment of truth.
                                —Trent Reznor on Year Zero

I just picked up the album yesterday and still haven't stopped listening to it. It looks as though sobriety definitely agrees with Trent. Great album. It was much better than I expected.

I also heard that there will be a Year Zero Pt. 2 release next year. If this is true this is definitely great news for NIN fans.
