    1080i and 1080p

Got to confess that I had little idea what the difference was between these two...

Now that I've finally had a chance to sit down and see a 60 inch 1080p "true" HDTV running...I am completely blown away by how much better it is than 1080i.

The store I was in listed them as 1 megapixel (1080i) and 2.1 megapixels (1080p) and the difference in resolution was stunning.

My 1080i HDTV suddenly looks second best...ouch...

Side note: PS3 can go to 1080p and the 360 only goes to 1080i...is that correct?

    Both can do 1080p.

You are the first person I've ever heard say the difference is "stunning", including High Def DVD review sites and places like Cnet.

      Re: 1080i and 1080p

      1080i is 1380 by 800.

1080p is 1900 by 1100 or something similarly high...

That's a BIG difference in resolution.

BTW I saw the stuff above at an official SONY show here in Asia.

They had a demo disk running on all formats / side by side...

1080P looked much better. The resolution is significantly higher.

Oh, a Sony show, that explains a lot then.

My samsung HDTV says "1080i"...and it goes to 1380 by 780.

I am confused here...1080i goes higher?

                  Cheers for the link

The demos I saw were all on 60 inch units. The 1080p looked amazing...absolutely perfect clarity. For that size TV, i was pretty much blown away.

I'm still blown away watching sports in 720p.

I've never noticed a difference that made me say wow I need to get rid of my 720p/1080i tv to get a 1080p tv at all.

Might look a tiny bit better but nothing most people will notice.

It better look good for the price of those big Sony TV's.

When networks start delivering programming in 1080p maybe I'll think about it...of course most tv still isn't in 720p or 1080i, so we probably need to wait for that first.

Oh, and by the time this happens, I'm guessing that the first 2160p tv will be hitting the market.

I have a question, looking at that C-Net article it says that ESPN is broadcast in 720p. I have a 50" Samsung 1080p DLP. Does that mean that the broadcast will look worse on my TV than it would on a 720p set?

No it just means that ESPN is not utilizing your set to its full potential. It will still look great!
